Ancient Egyptian Faience Hare Amulet

This is a very rare Egyptian amulet in the form of a hare. The amulet is mounted on a wooden 1920’s collectors base which is inscribed: „Hare, sacred to Osiris“.
It is a seldom opportunity to find an amulet in this good quality and then also attached

Rare head of a man with caricatural features. The man shows a bulged and furrowed forehead, deeply set beady eyes, a flattish nose with marked nostril, and fleshy lips. Strands of hair are brushed back from the forehead and from the temples.

A nicely executed thinbutted Danish Neolithic silex axe, dating to mid-late 4th mill. BC.

Unpolished axe with nice proprotions and clear 'seams' along the edges. Very nice workmanship.

Thinbutted axes were developed to help neolithic people to clear the forest to prepare the land for farming. The largest specimens - up to 40 cm - were put down in marches as offers.

A scarce thinbutted Danish Neolithic silex axe, mid-late 4th mill. BC.

The axe has a rarely seen feature with a carved ring in the middle of the head. Most thinbladed axes doesn't have this kind of fitting, so this specimen must have been fastened to the shaft in a different way than usual. Maybe used as an adze.

The pair consist of:

1. a thinbuttet axe dating to 3500-3000 BC. Almost fully polished with beautiful mottled amber and brown patina. Size is 15,5 cm - 6,1 inches.

2. A thinbladed axe, c 2500 BC - a period were the production of flint tools became more specialized. 12 cm. - 4,7 inches. Fully polished with nice and glossy grey patination.

Ancient Near East, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BC.

A large elaborate bronze cloak pin, cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process with poppy flower shaped terminal.

Used to fasten clothes, in this case due to the unusually heavy fabric and decoration, likely leather for presentation use - perhaps for a very thick cape or leather armor. The lower terminal decorated with knobs and 3 spikes.

An amazing and very large Iron lock with it's workable key, from a heavy gate, South-Germany, Renaissance period, 16th. century.

An early lock with a perfectly preserved locking mechanism. A snap lock with two bolts for extra security and with it's original key, so very rare!

The face shows almond shaped eyes, a flattish nose, and slit mouth. The well preserved left ear appears just below the partially present side lock. The neck slightly bent to the figure’s left side.

Rare handmade askos of lenticular body and truncated conical neck.
The lip around the spout is shaped as an oversized disc. Its back was bent by the potter to create space for an unusual ring handle of square cross-section.
Decorated with orange and purplish black bands alternating with very thin fillets and diamond patterns. The front of the neck with chevrons, one of them spiky, both flanked by a branch or shrub. The base of the belly with elongated triangles.

Handmade Daunian kyathos with horn-like projections on top of the high strap handle.
The pierced face of the handle with geometric decoration in orange and dull black.
The bottom of the bowl decorated with an hourglass pattern consisting of opposite black and red triangles.
The base with broad bands and a cross over a diamond motif at center.
The piece impresses with the fineness and radiance of the clay, as well as the vibrancy of the colors.

A lovely little set of three smaller axes, one likely German or Northern Europe, dark bronze hardstone and finely polished (9,8 cm), a nice green stone Meso-American celt, also neolithic period (6,2 cm), and lastly a pointed butt type, likely ancient Near East or Northern Africa (7,8 cm). Interesting lot that needs more study!

Of a fine early Roman style, c. 1st. century AD and with inspiration from archaic art. Light red clay with a beige overlay. die-formed. Standing Aphrodite with her cloak wrapped around her legs and holding a shell in each hand. Provincial?! Head, one foot and large parts of the shells are missing.

Large head of Serapis shown with a fulsome beard and fringed hairdo over the forehead. On the crown a closed modius decorated with an olive branch.
The face with a small nose and flat eye cavities with thin eyelids. The mouth enclosed by a stringy moustache.

The mask shows a funnel-shaped mouth and arched eyebrows over beady eyes. The flattish nose with pierced nostrils, the hair combed back with scattered curls behind the elongated neck.

Interesting collection of a faience Shu amulet and a book from the property of Lord Grenfell. Francis Grenfell was an interesting person with a very exciting life. The book „The Sacred Beetle: A Popular Treatise on Egyptian Scarabs in Art and History“, by John Ward has a personal dedication from the author to Lord Grenfell from 1903.
The faience Shu amulet comes also from the Lord Grenfell collection.
