Large Chinese Warring States Impressed Pottery jar (475 - 221 BC)

This large and attractive pottery jar was made during the Warring States period (475 - 221 BC). It is fairly "heavily-potted" and made from quite a high-fired pale grey pottery the surface of which has fired to a dark reddish-brown in places. It has an unusual wide mouth with a flat rim...

A large ovoid Chinese Martavan (aka Martaban) jar from the 16th/17th century. (Martavan jars were produced in China's southern region and shipped, via the port of Martabanin present day Myanmar, to various neighboring countries as storage containers for various commodities...these storage vessels became prized possessions by the local peoples.) The jar has a lovely honey brown colored glaze with bold dragon relief motif and loop handles around the shoulder...

Good condition except chipped at inside the lid.

Fine Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Foreigner with Oxford TL Test

It is made from a red pottery that has been cold-painted in a thick white pigment with the facial details picked out in red and black pigments. Chinese Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) earthenware statue of a man, commonly referred to as a “stick man.” These figures were modeled after wooden examples. The arms, which likely were wood, and the clothing have disappeared over time. A custom-made acrylic stand is included. Stands about 23” high (about 24” including the stand)...

Found in the Philippines. These identical jars feature a translucent green Qingbai-type glaze that pools on its carved lines. Its moulded structural form is covered by a roof tiled lid. A rare black glazed Song wine jar with two handles and a spout for pouring. These containers were used for offering a sweet rice wine. You will sometimes find remnants of the wine in the bottom of the jar that has solidified. Size: H: 27.3cm. Condition: No repairs. In it's original condition.

Ming Dynasty, Ca. 1500s

This figure of a seated scholar is glazed turquoise with amber colored highlights. The back is mostly unglazed except for the original white slip coating, now darkened with age. The interior is hollow and unglazed, exposing the reddish clay body. The white slip coating continues for an inch or so into the interior cavity. The face is covered with a thin white slip (now darkened) but is otherwise unglazed...

Fine Tall Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Pottery "Stick" Figure with Oxford TL Test

This tall and impressive pottery "stick" figure was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8), more specifically, the 2nd century BC. It is "heavily-potted" and made from a dense fine-grained pale grey pottery. It has been "cold painted" with a pink/brown flesh-coloured pigment...

A nice stout wine jug with two handles at the wide shoulders. The two handles have deliberate cuts at the tops, probably to tie rope for securing the stopper. The brownish black glaze covers the jar to about 2.5 cm from the bottom.

Period: Song (12th/13th Century)

Size: Height = 19 cm. (7.5 inches)

Condition: A couple of tiny glaze chips at the mouth's rim. The glaze is not degraded and still has a nice gloss.

From our Early Chinese Collection, a rare earthenware Buddhist offering vessel dating from either the Song or Yuan Dynasty (960-1368 AD). This offering vessel is one of a group of several highly obscure and esoteric pottery pieces hailing from Yunnan Province in Southwestern China. The formal scholarship on these pieces is unfortunately thin at best, and we are currently aware of only one publication addressing these pieces at all, which is Michael Teller's Offering Vessels of Yunnan...
