19th century Chinese scholar’s desk object carved out of bamboo to represent a cluster of several reishi fungus - the Fungus of Immortality. The top of the carving provides 2 areas for keeping very small objects - tiny ink cakes and such. Beautifully designed, superbly carved both on top and bottom, excellent detailing, great staining and patina. Wonderful feel of age, very appropriate object for a scholar’s desk. This small antique Chinese wooden storage container was used for calligraphy implements. Inksticks would have been held in the rear center compartment. Calligraphy brushes would have been held upright on the right and left side compartments. Seals or chops would have been stored in the lidded section. Originally painted with black lacquer, this piece has great age and wear patina.

This late 19th century Chinese hippopotamus tooth carving of a riverside landscape is 7 1/8” long, 1 ¾” high and 2” wide. The fitted carved hard wood stand is 8” long, 2 ¼” wide and 1 1/8” high. Rare early “si zhi” (four straight lines) style inkstone carved from an old fired brick. The characters on the brick are in an archaic style, no longer in use today. The square shaped flat bottomed inkstone with sloping grinding surface did not become popular until the Song Dynasty, so it is possible this was made into a inkstone long after it was a brick. Chinese are very fond of creating ink stones out of “found objects” such as roof tiles etc...

An outstanding piece, this scholar's rock in huanguali with finely carved scenes all around the mountain. This piece may date from the Qianlong period, but not later then early 19th century. It measures: H 22 cm, W. 14 cm, D. 10 cm. Condition: excellent, with a beautiful soft patina. A small opening at the top may heve been used as a brush holder.

A rare and finely carved boxwood tobacco box that could be hung from a man's belt. The lid carved with a 3-dimansional pair of Fo dogs, the sides with floral carvings with a bird and a deer. The opening where once the rope was attached, is in the shape of two bats. China, 18th/19th century. Dimensions: L. 7 cm (excluding the wooden ring), W. 3,8 cm, H. 3,5 cm. Condition: excellent, with beautiful wear and patina.

Rather unusual late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) Chinese seal carved out of a natural boulder. The stone is of military green color, softer than jade and appears to be magmatic in nature - see the folds of its outside produced by cooling of the rock. A completely hand formed and detailed fresh water coup in the form of a highly stylized archaic duck. This sancai water pot dates late Qing, circa 1880, and is pattern after the porcelains of the Song dynasty. A great item for the collector of scholar items. Measures 3" long x 2.5" high at head.

This Chinese carved jade (jadeite) brush washer is a product of the early 20th century. It depicts a lotus leaf and a blossom on its side. It is 5 ¼” long, 3” wide and half an inch thick. It is in excellent condition.

Antique Chinese small carved bamboo brush pot, handcarved with a scene of noble men in a boat with a back drop of swirling water, craggy rocks and knotty pines, rim and foot are trimmed with a dark hardwood.

19th century Chinese fingering piece in a form of a natural Manchurian nut. Excellent piece to use for meditation practice with natural design, richly textured surface, superb warm patina from more than 100 years of handling, very pleasant to hold. Wonderful object for a scholar’s desk. Length 1.92 inches.

This mid 19th century famille-rose ink pan (box) is 2 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter. On the top of the cover depicts two roosters fighting in the flower garden. The side is decorated with a floral design. It is in excellent condition.

The base is made up of several small wooden parts finely cut with flowers, scrolls and Greek motifs. The majority of the wood is dark brown, almost black, small inserted panels are made of boxwood, the barriers are made of bone. These barriers were tinted green, a color today almost completely erased by light and time, however more pronounced shades of green remain in the most sheltered places. This barrier is carved with plum blossoms, bamboo stems and pine needles...

This early 20th century Chinese porcelain water jar is 2 ½ inches tall and 2 ¼ inches wide. It has hand painted butterflies and a floral design over a white background. The color is slightly worn and it is in good condition.
