Statue of Zhen Wu, or Xuan Wu, the God of the North, in formal attire, sitting on a rocky throne, under which his two attributes --- the snake and the tortoise --- are hiding, his right arm resting on a chimera. Wood, with remnants of the original lacquering and gilding. Black glass eyes. China, Ming Dynasty. Height: 10 1/2" (26,7 cm). Good condition.
A very rare yab-yum bronze from the end of the 19th. century ( Qing Dynasty 1644 - 1912 ), acquired for the van Norten collection in the early 30's of the last century in Sichuan showing the male deity in sexual union with his female consort. Yab-yum means Tibetan literally 'father - mother'.

19th century Chinese small carved boxwood architectural panel depicting a Chinese scholar with 3 attendants among pavilions and trees. Must have been part of an altar piece. Wonderful quality carving with piercing and deep undercutting, rich detailing (see several Fungus of Immortality), very pleasant wear and patina. Size 2 3/8 x 4 7/8 x 9/16 inches. Seated on a lotus throne, guarded by two attendants. On the back of the stand there is an inscription : This is a statue (or carving) or Kwanyin, for Mr. Wang (??)'s wife, Mrs. Chao (??).

Condition: usual age wear, loss of gilding, the ribbon from the crown at the right side is missing. H. 23 cm.

The Buddha is seated on a lotus base in abhaya mudra position which means protection, peace and the dispelling of fear.
This statue has a Qianglong Seven-Charakter Mark, DA QING QIANLONG NIAN JING ZAO, (1736-1795).

The primary deity of salvational sectarian religion, she is a grandmotherly figure who wants to call back to heaven all of her children, the inhabitants of this world. The cults devoted to her were often explicitly egalitarian, and women played prominent roles as leaders...
From our Chinese Monochrome Collection, a fine carved jade image of Guanyin, late 19th- early 20th century, depicting the deity with a wonderful serene expression in a variation of Royal Ease mudra while sitting upon a rockwork base, and cradling a ruyi sceptre in her right arm. The jade is of pale olive tone with russet colored highlights and is rather substantial in heft, weighing almost 1.4 pounds.
Size and Condition: 5 inches tall, 4 1/4 inches wide, 1 1/2 inches thick...
Beautifully carved soap stone figure of sage Fulushuo, he leans on an elaborately carved staff and hold the peach of longevity, on an intricately carved dark stone stand on which are carved a bat and a deer, also symbols of happiness and longevity, wonderful expression, stone of a lovely orange and green, Republic Period (circa 1910-1930).
Total size: 20 3/4" high x 8" wide x 5 1/2" deep.
This is a Tibeto-Chinese bronze Buddha from the 19th. century. It has a unique design with lots of miniature Buddhas applicated.
Rests of gilt are still visible.
It has a size of 22 cm height, width 17 cm x 13 cm and the weight is 2,4kg.

The goddess of compassion and mercy is adorned with an elaborate crown and necklace.

Small statue of Buddha wearing a diadem, in a meditative posture ("dhyana mudra"), holding a stylized beggar bowl in his hands, sitting cross-legged on a double lotus throne. Bronze, with thick encrusted green patina. Tibet, 16th century. Height: 5 1/2" (14 cm). Diadem partly chipped, a few tiny casting defects, otherwise very good condition. A rather unusual aspect of the Buddha image.
Three small amulets cast in the form of deities standing in formal dress. Bronze, with partly encrusted reddish-green patina. China, Han dynasty. Height: 52, 54 and 54 mm. All in good condition.
Antique pair of Chinese Shi (fu-lions). Carved of wood and lacquered red. These traditional guardians were placed on either side of an important door to guard against dangerous spiritual elements and people. They are male (with his paw on a ball) and female (with a cub).

A large and powerful polychromed wooden carving of a Chinese demonic altar guardian figure, possibly Shun-Feng Erh, dating to the 17th century. Multiple coats of polychrome confirm the piece's great age. Intact, with, most probably, a reattached break in the figure's sash, visible in the photos. A full exposition of the role played by similar figures can be found in Arts of Asia, September-October 1998, "Demonic Images on Chinese Altars." The piece stands just over 16 inches in height...
