Fine earthenware dish from Satsuma. Polychrome decoration where blue (typical Gosu blue) is dominant, this type of decoration was called "Imperial" although these ceramics were not intended for the emperor but mainly for export to the Europe and the United States...

Important and rare bowl, large in size, scalloped in shape, with a small heel, from the Satsuma kilns. On a blue enamel background, the decoration represents cherry blossoms with a couple of peacocks among peonies inside. The whole is of a very good quality of gold and polychrome enamels. From our Japanese Collection, a truly superb satsuma vase, Meiji period (1868-1912), of robust globular form, depicting seven separate circular reserves of figures set against a most unusual and very appealing variegated ground that morphs from emerald green, to celadon, to cream, and finally to brown, all heavily overlaid with a rich brocade of chrysanthemum heads and other floral and geometric motifs executed in gilt. The neck has a heavily gilded deep red ground which sets it off very nicely...

From our Japanese Collection, a superb and large satsuma lidded jar / tea caddy by Ryozan, Meiji Period 1868-1912, stunningly executed with exceptional fineness depicting two cartouches of people gathering, alternating with two cartouches of ducks and birds in nature scenes, all separated and framed by intricate brocaded reserves of floral motifs using wonderful color variation and extensive gilt.

Size and Condition: A relatively large caddy at 7 1/4 inches tall, 6 1/8 inches wide.

This an exquisite Satsuma tea jar from Ryozan. The gold work and painting are examples of his best workmanship. The piece is in excellent condition but the original lid is missing and this lid has a repair. It was used to help this great piece display better. Maybe some one out there has a better lid for the great piece. It stands 6 inches tall.

Japanese antique ceramic onigawara roof tile with design of swirling waves and a star shaped crest, which is the crest used by the Japanese police force. Piece is highly three dimensional, impressed with characters on top. Size: 12" high x 18 1/2" wide x 6" deep.

The Jomon Period (14,000 B.C.~ 300 B.C.) is considered to be the most intriguing period in Japanese Art history.
