This Tea Bowl (Chawan) in the style of Kenzan is decorated in white slip and underglaze iron.

An antique Japanese Karatsu ware tea container or chaire with motif of donkeys painted on the side of the piece. One side is painted in a indigo blue color with a fine tip and on the other side is brown done in thicker lines. This Japanese ceremonial Tenmoku style chawan (tea bowl) is a late Meiji period product. It is 5 ½” in diameter at the top, the foot is 1 ½” in diameter and 2” high. It has a very dark brown with white textured spots on the exterior. The base is not glazed and there is a swirl mark in the center. The interior of the chawan is richly colored black, dark brown, light brown and grayish blue. It is in excellent condition.

A Nezumi Shino covered box or jar. Probably a mukozuke (but for which we are not familiar with examples accompanied by a cover.) White slip inlaid into incised decoration under the warm, gray glaze - conspicuous on the cover but not so much in decoration on the sides of the box where contrast does not succeed as well. A pleasant "swipe" of white slip under the cover provides a bit of a "surprise"...

Fascinating Taisho Period C.1920 tea ceremony bronze tripod incense censor. Almost art deco in design and feel. The Murashi-do bronze was dipped in hot oi at firing to create the mottled patinated colorings. The handles are elephant heads. Simple elegance envelops this wonderful late Meiji Period C.1910 bronze 'koro' crane incense burner. The piece has two parts; the top consisting of the crane's feathers and head, and the bottom which contains the ash. On the underside of the bottom in relief are the crane's legs tucked under. A fabulous set of five wooden Kashizra sweets dishes cut from worm eaten hardwood, enclosed in an age darkened wooden box titled Keyaki Meme Chinmoku Kashiki. The title identifies the wood as Keyaki, or Zelkova, a member of the elm family. It is a highly prized hardwood in Japan and has a beautiful undulating grain.. Each dish is 13.5 cm (5-1\4 inches) diameter and all are in excellent condition. One plate has a water ring, as they were likely used as tea cup saucers for sencha steeped tea....

We have a particular interest in beautiful old Raku tea bowls and spend quite a bit of time searching for exceptional examples to include in our gallery. Here we see a beautiful work that appears to be at least 100-200 years old which would place its era of production in late Edo or Meiji. We had our master kintusgi craftsman add a skillfully applied repair to the side giving it some added character; a truly one-of-a-kind treasure.
