An antique Japanese Edo era Ko Tansu (personal storage chest) made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) wood. All original finish and hand made iron fittings. Made with straight dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nails. Original used to store daily documents, ephemera, small utilitarian accessories and personal items. Present day uses include using it as a small side table or a bedside nightstand.

Third son of the director of the Kano School of painting, Yasunobu was appointed head of the Kyoto branch at a young age after his father’s death. Meanwhile, his two older brothers went to Edo to take up prestigious positions painting for the Tokugawa Shogunate. In 1662 Yasunobu gained the honorific title of “Hogen,” and near the end of his life in his 70s he wrote a treatise on the art of painting that would server as a central doctrine for later generations of painters...

A very interesting chawan (tea bowl) from the Korean Joseon period (Richo in Japanese; 1392-1897). This particular piece appears to date from the 15th/ 16th century and comes with what may be the original box and a quite old silk pouch. The light creamy crackled glaze is smooth in the hand and fine hairline fractures radiating along the walls of the bowl show remnants of gold repairs from previous centuries...

A fine so-called “Deshima”, or more likely a scene of Scheveningen in the Netherlands or an imaginary composition based upon it, after an unknown original by Frederik van Frytom. The bowl is decorated with four elements of the pattern, two figures in a field, a female figure with cow held upon a leash, a rider in a landscape, and a “light-house”, beacon upon a hill...

A fine example of Edo period Kano painting, this generously proportioned hanging scroll illustrates a late autumn scene from the Japanese countryside over 300 years ago. The poem on the scroll reads:

Solitary, with the color, of nothingness
A close to autumn, on a ring of mountaintops

Only one of a kind! Distorted half cylinder shaped (near kutsugata) tea bowl made of light, coarse unrefined Mino clay. It dates from the Momoyama Period.

The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical feldspatic shino glaze inside and outside, with the exception of the bottom' the roughly cut foot ring. A very minor iron oxide content of the clay has changed the white shino glaze to light pink (beni). This is absolutely rare...

This is a Japanese anrique natural Dyed with vegetable dye beautiful hand embroidery kakesita obi of Mid-Edo period(1780-1800). There are a lot of thin stains over time. There is no damage. Distorted half cylinder shaped (kutsugata) tea bowl made of little iron bearing, coarse, unrefined Mino clay. The expertly thrown body, trimmed with a potters knife (hera) is covered with the typical, glossy black iron oxide inside and outside. Here it is a rarely seen dark brown due to a lack of manganese.

A window on the side has been left unglazed for decoration in iron oxide engobe under a clear ash glaze in a form of straight and wavy lines. This is a typical Momoyama design...

Beautiful antique painting of Hotei (also known as Budi or the Laughing Buddha), possibly depicted in his Dharmalaya body. He is shown sitting comfortably on a wooden bridge as men and women in gold straw hats walk by. Hotei is one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese culture and is revered for his happiness and the luck that he brings. Set in glass and framed, 17th/18th century. AN OLD JAPANESE PAINTING OF MONJU BOSATSU.

Monju Bosatsu - Manjushri Bodhisattva of Wisdom. The painting appears to have great age and even though not in the best of condition it still has a compelling presence. It is painted on a composite sheet of thin paper, the joins can be seen as angled lines across the sheet and mounted as a kakemono. The painting is signed with a single seal impression in gold.
