This small sitting Buddha dates to the 16th century...The cast metal is somewhat deteriorated as would be expected. The names and borders of the countries of southeast Asia have changed and moved over the centuries which makes naming specific country of origin somewhat difficult....Thailand,Burma,Siam... Rare Large Japanese Meiji Period Nashiji Makie Lacquer Jubako 5-Tiered Stack Box with Base/Stand. Fine Takamakie Gold and Cinnabar/brown/black Lacquer with some Raden/ Mother of Pearl inlay. Beautiful artistic Pine and Crane motif. Good condition overall, some minor mother of pearl inlays missing. Large zushi of square shape with double doors. Outside black lacquer and bronze hard ware, finely engraved with meandering flowers, inside gold lacquer. Inside a sculpture of the deity Benten, or Benzaiten, in her appearance with eight arms. In her hands she holds sword, jewel, bow, halberd and wheel. Other attributes are missing. On her head she wears the typical crown with torii, referring to the island of Enoshima, where the big Benten shrine is...

Sculpture of Shomen Kongo, standing with 6 arms, holding ghanta and sword, bow and arrow, halberd and chakra. Shomen Kongo protects against demons and diseases. Wood stained black, with metal parts. Japan, Edo period, shortly after 1800.

These dolls are a part of the Hina doll set displayed for the Japanese Girls Day, Hina Matsuri (Festival) in March. The day is also called Peach Festival. When the peach blossoms open in February to March by breaking through the snow, it is an announcement of the beginning of spring in Japan. Here he is represented as Danda Jizo, assisting those who are suffering in hell and saving small children from the wheel of rebirth. This is an extremely fine frame of bone artifacts which includes needles, awls, pendants, harpoons, spoon and arrowheads. The harpoons are from New England. I purchased the flute from Tom Davis. He said it was the best he had ever seen. Most are from Tom Davis, Gilbert Cooper and Michael Hough. The large center arrowhead is a deassentioned piece from a Colorado museum with COA and paperwork.
