A crane rises elegantly from a truncated tree, the legs intricately crafted and the body flowing in a liquid grace. This is Bizen Saikumono, a body of Bizen popular throughout the Edo, Meiji and early 20th centuries. Craftsman carved wild animals, mythical beasts, human figures and many other figures out of the smooth Bizen clay, relying on perfection of form, allowing the firing to add color without overt decoration. 19th century marine material netsuke of Hotei seated leaning on his bag , a boy in straw hat touching the sizeable belly of the monk. Hotei was supposedly a historical figure - a 10th century Chinese monk, who was very kind to children, and is worshipped as one of the 7 Gods of Good Fortune. Nicely carved, pleasant patina. Signed TOSHIKAZU on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 543, number 3046). Length 2 inches.

Antique Chinese jade carving of a recumbent horse. Seated on it's haunches, it's hooves curved underneath it's body, the horse looks back over it's shoulder. Details of face, main and tail accent the pleasing arch of the horse's neck. Carved of yellow and brown mottled jade.

Pair of Qilin, a Chinese mythical beast sometimes associated with giraffes or Camelopard. Polychrome glaze on clay, with fine detailing. Bottom of the pair contains a seal reading: Qianlong Nianzhi which would be from the mid to late 18th century. However in reality the piece was made during the 19th century. Size: Length: 4" Width: 2.5" Height:10.25".

An amethyst snuff bottle in pebble shape, the outside carved in relief with birds among twigs. Moderately hollowed. The stopper en suite, in the form of a bird, spoon made of bone. Condition: few rough areas and tiny chips. Dimension: 7.2 cm high.

A small Japanese Satsuma koro with a pierced metal cover by an unknown maker, late 19th century. The vase is decorated with the Imperial chrysanthemum crest and three family crests, including the Paulownia of the Toyotomi clan, the Hollyhock leaves of the Tokugawa shoguns and the cross of the Shimazu clan who ruled over Satsuma, Ōsumi and Hyūga.

At the top corners can be found quarter-flower heads delicately painted in red and gold. Each mon is finely detailed...

19th century lacquered wood netsuke of a standing boy wearing in shishi head piece and beating a drum with strikers. Wood is lacquered in Negoro style - red lacquer over black, so as it wears the black and later wood start showing. Very well carved, excellent detailing - see the ferocious mask, old loss to the tip of the left ear, beautiful patina. Does not stand on its own, but hangs well. Height 2 inches.

Beautiful two section desk with a 2 section inlaid marble top. The top section has three drawers, the bottom section has two drawers. The marble is grey and white. Brass hardware. It measures 44"wide x 22"deep 32" tall. early Republic period circa 1900.
