This small wood box contains a folding top panel on which is mounted a mirror, and a drawer for holding personal items. The box is constructed using pawlonia (kiri) wood on all sides with hardwood and pawlonia panels on the top. The box measures about 10" long x 7 3/4" wide x 5 1/4" high, and dates to the 19th Century. The condition is good. There is a small repair to one corner of the drawer. The nails holding the mirror panel hinges have been replaced with longer nails...

This round inkstone was carved out of a naturally occurring layered stone...both the bottom and cover viewed from the side show the striation of the stone.The covered has a pond design etched with raised koi fish. It is really lovely. The inkstone is just over 4 inches in diameter and .8 inches in height.

Late Meiji (1890s - 1910s) Japanese ivory chashaku (tea scoop used for powdered tea during tea ceremony) of elegant slender shape. Comes in original chazutsu (inscribed bamboo case). Delicately carved, in great condition, beautiful patina, very pleasant to the touch. Chashaku length 7.25 inches, case length 9.25 inches.

This Chinese golden colored Sha-green is large by shagreen standards...it spans almost 7 inches at the longest point front to back, and stands just over 3 inches high. The top clearly has some scuffs and loss to the hide, which for me enhance the beauty of the box. The box is hinged at the back and the inside is lined with leather.

Antique pair of kapala, Buddhist ritual skull cups made of silver and mixed metal. Each cup stands on a triangular shaped base with repoussé flames and skulls. The cups themselves are rimmed with rows of tiny skulls and have lids with vajra finials. Show ritual use.

Rather unusual late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) Chinese seal carved out of a natural dense stone with numerous cream to brown colored layers wonderfully resembling flowing hair, and it is not soapstone. The impression of the seal is shown on the first photo (image is flipped left to right to present the image as it will actually print on paper). Beautiful surface, wonderful flow to the texture of the stone, one side is left in its natural state in a very clever nod to a scholar’s sensibility...

This Chinese carved bamboo brush rest has traditional dragons chasing pearl and cloud motif. The background shape is the 5 mountains and the rim of the mountains have carved ridges. The piece measures 3.5 inches high and 6 inches across. The natural curve of the bamboo allows the piece to stay upright, and the piece remains balanced on the 1/2 inch thick bamboo. Condition is very good.

Very interesting antique Aka Raku Bajyohai Tea Bowl, made with a rare long foot. Bowls like this are called 馬上杯, Bajyohai: Rider's Cup. Its form makes them convenient for the ancient horse-riders to drink tea from.

Antique Japanese vase decorated with scroll vine motifs around the mouth of the vase and animal like figures near the mid-section of the vase. The glaze used for this piece is emulation Jun ware which was developed in the Song Dynasty in China and in Japan, Song dynasty style glazes captivated connoisseurs and tea masters. Staff carved out of one piece of a hard species of wood. On the top crouches a female figure with long hair, the arms wrapped around her body. The tip is a lighter middle brown while the rest is patinated a dark brown. Probably used in Shamanistic rites in tribal regions. Himalayans.

DESCRIPTION: A red and gilt ink cake in the form of a turtle with a curled snake on its back. In ancient China, the tortoise and the snake were thought to be spiritual creatures symbolizing longevity. Both the front and back have been finely pressed in raised relief with gilt accents. One of the treasures of the Chinese scholar’s studio, this ink cake is in excellent condition, in its original box, and dates from the first quarter of the 20th C. or earlier. Antique Tibetan hand-carved wooden deity mask of Mahakala, a guardian diety, the fierce and powerful being and counterpart to Kali / Mahakali. His name means "Greater than Time" as he upholds ultimate rule and power over all forces, including time and death. A wonderful boxwood carved netsuke of five turtles climbing on top of each other. Intricate details can be seen throughout, creating a very realistic form. Each turtle has little black eyes. A real cute, Kawai miniature Kyusu style teapot for green tea with a side handle, made in the tradition of (Otagaki) Rengetsu yaki, from Okasaki production center, Kyoto. Chamotte with a nice craquelure glaze. Size L 10 x h 4 cm. Otagaki Rengetsu (1791–1875) was a Buddhist nun, famous for her calligraphy but also for her production of ceramics for tea appreciation which she would embellish with her poems. Meiji 1868-1912. This is a circular copper scholar’s ink box with etching of a love poem on top of the cover. It has three seal ark on it, one on the extreme right and two just below the two below the name of the author. DESCRIPTION: An attractive scholar's calligraphy brush, crafted using long brown horsehair bristles attached to a bulbous ox-horn ferrule and segmented, solid ox- horn shaft. Chinese yellow Crackle ware Pottery Brush Washer and brush Holder, Ca. pre 1920, 1 5/8" high-maximum measurement, 2 3/4" wide,1 3/4" deep-maximum measurement, with crackled yellowish beige color glaze, a high relief frog beside rock garden on the top next to a round hole 3/8" diameter to hold a single brush. This crackle ware Brush Washer has glaze crack and few glaze flake frits on the glaze.

Antique Korean blue and white porcelain water dropper in the form of a fish with spiked fins and carved scales and other detail. The piece has two holes, one for air and one for pouring out water for calligraphy.
