A pair of early 19th century beaded deer hide moccasins. Seed beads, deer skin, clear beads, silk ribbon. The moccasins are probably from Niagara Falls area. c. 1830-40

Provenance: Owned by Thomas Wistar (1798-1876) a Quaker, who was commissioned by President Grant to arrange treaties with Indian tribes. His papers are in the collection of Haverford College.

Antique Chinese bitong (brush pot) carved of huanghuali wood with mythical chilong creatures. Undulating edges around the rim seem to unfurl. The lower portion is carved with a cusped edge and three low feet. Beautiful grain.

This is a traditional Qing Dynasty woman's skirt.

An exceedingly rare (in fact the only one I have ever seen) Tenmoku-Dai stand for a Tenmoku Chawan by Suwa Sozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kuruwa Tenmoku Dai (Curved Circular Tea Bowl Stand). It is made of layer upon layer of lacquer, carved with scrolling designs revealing the depth of the lacquer in a style known as Guri. The artist has carved his seal into the inside of the base. It is 15 cm (6 inches) diameter7.5 cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

Scholar’s accoutrements (Chaekgori), Korea, Joseon dynasty, 19th century.
Chaekgeori paintings always included books, bronzed, boxes of various
kinds, lacquer, porcelain flower vase and bowls of fruit, writing paraphernalia (rolled scrolls of paper, brushes, ink sticks, and ink stone) and glass fishbowls, among other objects. There is literary evidence for the tradition of Ch’aekgori from the late 18th century.
