Patinated bronze top with inlaid and carved design of a Saizo dancer playing tsuzumi (a hand drum) by a pine sapling and with the moon partially obscured by cloud in the background. Saizo dancers are usually attending Manzai dancers during New Year celebrations. Cedar wooden ‘post-hide’ or hashira-kakushi that is used as a decoration of one of the posts in a room, or a horizontal post of the tokonoma (niche). The post-hide is the same width as the pillar posts in a Japanese house, hiding it thus almost completely in width.

A rare and very finely carved gourd container with ivory cover, illustrated and inscribed with the "Peach Blossom Poem" from the famous story "Hong Lou Meng" (the "Dream of the Red Chamber"), dated - "made in the tenth month of the twenty-second year of the Guanxu" - 1897. The cover depicts a dragon amongst clouds in pursuit of a flaming pearl and is signed - "carved by Lu Shu Yi". Condition - there is a stabilized body crack to the gourd - no other damages and no losses...

Very unusual 19th century marine netsuke of obihasami type, the upper hook carved as leaves of a vine holding a long pod, and the lower hook as a snail starting to climb up the body of the netsuke. The hooks at the top and bottom of the piece go around the edges of obi - a sash holding a kimono. Extraordinary clever and subtle piece in Japanese taste, amazing rendition of the soft body of the mollusc. Excellent patina, the best netsuke of that type that I ever had. Length 4 inches.

19th century Japanese leather tobacco pouch with kiseruzutsu (tobacco pipe holder). Bronze kanemono - pouch clasp - is made in a shape of a roof tile bearing Toyotomi mon - the crest of the Toyotomi clan. Ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) appears to be bone stained coral red. The pipe case is made out of dark celluloid type material and has a dent in it as seen on photos. The pouch still contains a bit of finely shredded tobacco...
