Xuande mark, but ca. 1600s

This incense-burner has a flaring rim form raised on three ogee feet and has its original patina and considerable carbon incrustation from many years of use. Two lion's head handles embellish the body and the cast Da Ming Xuande mark is centered on the base. The interior is darkened from use and the exterior shows small areas of darkened bronze where not obscured by blackish patina. There is a slight dent to the rim. Cylinder shaped (hanzutsu) tea bowl made of light, fine, unrefined Mino clay. Shape and style (note the trimmed walls) make it appear contemporary with the late Oribe bowls.

The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical white, feldspatic Shino glaze has been poured under which a decoration of a willow tree (yanagi) and a fence have been applied in iron oxide (oni ita). Just the foot ring and its immediate surrounding was left unglazed...

A large Kakiemon dish decorated with the Three Friends of Winter to the rim and a central motif of a Peony. The reverse decorated with a continuous lotus scroll and a spiral fuku in a double square. The dish dates to the late seventeenth century circa 1680-1700. The dish measures approximately 25 cm in diameter and stands 6cm high. The dish is in good condition, except for a crack to the rim and small filled chip. Shipping at Cost.

This is a very finely cast Tibetan bronze fragment dating to the 17th century or possibly earlier. It depicts a wrathful deity, possibly Vajrabhairava, complete with finely modeled skull crown/tiara to the wrathful head. Please have a look at the photos and feel free to ask any questions. the piece measures 2.5" in height (6.25cm), not including the custom base. Exceptionally well cast with very fine detail. Not easy to find these days

An impressive Japanese Soto zen calligraphy by the noted calligrapher, Gesshu Soko (1617-1696). Porcelain dish from japan, arita, kakiemon kilns. end of the 17th century. Decor in the center of phoenixes, rocks and peonies in overglaze enamels and underglaze cobalt blue (which is unusual for Kakiemon). On the edge, decoration of the three friends, bamboo, pine and prunus, by fantasy the artist added chrysanthemums. On the reverse the apocryphal mark of the Chinese emperor Tcheng-hoa. Very old and wonderful carved wood figure of the buddhist god Fudo Myoo, he stands with laso in one hand and sword in the other, made of wood with mineral pigments, glass eyes, metal details including sword, large and dramatic with fire nimbus, Muromachi Period, inscription on the back of nimbus says Yuwayadera (name of temple), nimbus is signed that it was restored by Minamoto Haruhisa April 16, 1560. Chinese Qing dynasty wucai baluster form porcelain jar painted with two large phoenix birds in flight among peony flowers and leafy scrolling foliage. A narrow border holding two qilong among flowers and leafy vines is at the high shoulder below a band of scrolling foliage at the neck. Brown dressed rim. Glazed interior and flat unglazed base...

Sutra book clasp cast in the shape of an H, with a Tibetan "dorje" (or "vajra") placed horizontally at its center. Square opening at top and bottom for attachment. Bronze, with partly encrusted greenish patina. Tibet, 17th century, maybe earlier. Height: 1 5/8" (4,2 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand. Erosion due to great age, otherwise good condition. Note: such implement was used to lock the straps that kept a "sutra" book (a book containing Buddhist texts) closed.

A Chinese Shiwan stoneware fanghu vase with a jun glaze, late Ming/early Qing dynasty. The hollow tube handles associate this type of vase with the arrow game pastime but this example, given the small diameters involved would be unsuitable. The glaze is a transmutation glaze and its colour is decided by the kiln conditions at the peak temperature.

Attractive pair of Arita Polychrome Vases decorated with yellow, green, maroon, black, iron red and gilt enamels. With two scenes of bijin, each on a terrace in a garden setting. Below an underglaze blue chrysanthemum scroll with moulded flowerheads. Japanese L17thC. Height 15.0cm.
