Nice old carved hardwood box from the Shan State, Myanmar with traces of original lacquer. This was collected around 1988 in Northern Thailand, and originally dates to early the 20th century. Please note this is not a tourist piece artificially stressed to look old. 19th century wooden netsuke of two frogs frolicking on differently sized peony buds with stems. Wonderfull quality carving (see finely incised petals texture) carved, very beautiful warm patina. Signed GYOKUSEKI on the bottom - there is Gyokuseki listed on p. 428 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, but this is much better quality carving than his usual work, probably a different carver with the same name. 19th century wooden netsuke of a turtle with its head and limbs hidden inside the carapace. Elegant strong carving, wonderful rhythm to the sections of the carapace, beautiful depiction of the creature. Central plastron on the back is removable and has a hole at the lower tip that serves as himotoshi. Wonderful patina, very pleasant to handle. Length 1.6 inches.

A lovely ancient Egyptian Scarab, c. 1070 or older, from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). It is 9/16” long (14 mm) and made of faience. Scarabs empowered life and resurrection and were often placed under mummy wrappings to protect the body and to help it resurrect. Pictured on the bottom are images of vulture goddess Mut, and an Ankh. This Scarab comes in a jewelry display cup.

A large rosewood, huanghuali brush pot, bitong of simple cylindrical form with thick walls and the base with an inset plug. The wood grain has particularly nice patterns, with a few 'ghost eyes', and a wonderful deep honey-brown patina. H 16 x 16,4 cm Diameter Late Ming/ early Qing Dynasty. Condition: good with a couple of chips at the lower part and thin hairline at the bottom.

Finely cast statue of Buddha, in monk's robes, sitting cross-legged on a double lotus throne, his hands in bhumisparsa mudra. 19th century netsuke of a monkey trapping an octopus in a large jar encrusted with barnacles. Unusual subject, superbly carved, excellent faces, wonderful detailing - see the smug face of the mammal and distressed one of the invertebrate, fine fur, jar surface texture and precise barnacle structures. Eyes of both creatures are inlaid with black horn. Beautiful wear and patina consistent with age, old collection number in red on the back. Height 1 1/4 inches.
