A large Chinese gongshi, or scholar rock, highly appreciated as a contemplative viewing piece by literati. The piece is formed by natural elmwood root that has been lacquered, entangling a lingbi stone, originating from the Anhui province of China. Inset within a wooden base.

Antique Japanese pair of abumi (samurai stirrups for horse riding). Made of iron and lacquered black with red lacquer foot. Each abumi is decorated with designs of kiri blossoms in gold lacquer. The buckle of each stirrup has an intricate pierced design and mon in gold lacquer. (Mounted on matching stands made of metal with wooden bases.)

DESCRIPTION: A fine antique folk art frame with deeply set mirror, the frame intricately inlaid with multi-colored woods forming geometric designs including diamonds, stars, fans and other parquetry motifs. This is a wonderful folk art piece executed with obvious skill; narrow beaded inner frame is gold leaf. Excellent condition, no losses or cracks. Provenance: Clifford A. Six small sterling beakers with gilt interiors by Edward H. Stockwell of London. All are marked appropriately. Only the bottoms which show very light wear and very faint spotting have been polished. They measures 1-3/4" x 1-1/4" at the widest point.Total weight is 1.8ozs.
