Rare and important mask of Defender of the Buddhist Faith, with an aggressive expression, bulging eyes, open mouth showing fangs, sun and moon symbols on forehead, stylized beard. Wood, with traces of kaolin in the recesses. Himalayan Region, Bhutan or Tibet, 18th century, probably earlier. Height: 14 1/2" (38 cm). The mask is mounted on a custom wood stand. Old accidents, erosion, otherwise good condition. Provenance: Old American collection.

Small Chinese jade water coup carved in the form of a lotus leaf with a flower set on the bottom forming a base. Lotuses have been a preferred motif within the literati tradition and desk accessories with motifs of lotuses are often seen. Rare and large bronze shrine. The central figure is a Jina or Tirthankara. He is surrounded by small Jina's on the back plate. Each of the 24 Tirthankaras is represented by an animal or a symbol. There is an engraved animal on the foot of this shrine, but it is hard to distinguish which animal it is. The shrine is in an excellent condition, all three parts belong together, there are no repairs. It has a clean appearance due to the daily worshipping and washing tradition in Jainism...

A rare square dish, kaku-zara, of cushion fom made in the early 18th century for Export to Europe. It is decorated in the centre with a classic kacho-ga motif of Chrysanthemums and Butterflies, and the border is painted with hosoge-mon, stylised floral motifs, reserved within a blue and gilt brocade ground with further stylised floral motifs. The dish is decorated in a kinsai palette of blue, gold and iron red wash...

Rare Ming dynasty Chenghua period blue and white tea cup, base with 4 character Xuande Nian Zhou (Made in Xuande) mark, decorated with lotus flower motif, good condition no damage, size: 7 cm diameter.

A fine square form dish kakuzara decorated with a scene of a large Pavillion or Temple Complex set upon a lakeside shore with Peony scroll motifs to two corners and a high foot ring with traditional comb foot. The design is one of those originally selected by the Shogun Ieharu (1737-1786) in 1773, and continued to be tendered and reserved for presentation to the Shogun during the Edo period...

A nice quality Ko Imari bowl decorated with three ogee shaped niches containing a stylised Lotus motif against an iron red ground inset against a diaper brocade ground over painted in light gilt with a figure of a Daoist immortal carrying a pine bough over his or her shoulder. The conventionalised pose of the figure is similar to He Xiangu, who carries a Lotus in a similar manner; the only female member of the Baxian...

Beautiful antique Japanese cha tansu (tea chest) made of beautiful burl keyaki (elm) wood all over with original lacquer finish. Drawers of various sizes with heavy iron hardware with hirute shaped handles, side handles and four locks. Two compartments with sliding panels. Middle compartment includes staggering shelves and two small drawers. This piece is originally from Shizuoka, Japan. Age: Taisho Period (1912 - 1925). Size: 28.5"H x 30.5"L x 13.5"D.

Very old and important grotesque mask, with an accentuated grinning expression. Wood, traces of black pigments. Himalayan Region, Arunachal Pradesh, Monpa Sherdukpen Peoples, 18th century, probably earlier. Height: 11 1/8" (28 cm). The mask is mounted on a custom wood stand. Strong erosion, old insect infestation (no danger), otherwise good condition. Provenance: old American collection.

This small ivory carving of a geisha is a late Meiji period (1868~1911) product. It is 3 1/8" high, 1 1/4" wide and a little less than 1" thick. It depicts a geisha bowing her head demurely and looking at the floor. Her right hand holds her kimono robe closed; her left hand rests on her chest. The artist signature is on the bottom. It is in great condition.

Authentic Persian drum for summoning birds. Late 18th early 19th century, Brass with old skin 18 cm diameter, 10 cm high. Body and chain and pins all in good condition, skin damaged.
