Rare Chinese Neolithic Pottery Jar (Xindian)

This rare pottery jar was made around 3,000 years ago. Although we are not certain from which Neolithic culture it originates, it does have similarities to pottery of the Xindian Culture (c. 1200 - 500 BC). It is fairly "heavily-potted" and the surface colour of the pottery varies considerably due to uneven conditions in the kiln during firing. Offered are two desirable, circa 1905-1910, smooth face hickory shaft golf clubs. Smooth face golf clubs fell out of fashion, and perhaps function, by the very early 1900s, yet they were still offered in catalogues for a number of years beyond this date.

The 1st smooth face club is stamped on the back "R.B.WILSON - OK SPECIAL - MADE IN SCOTLAND". The lambskin grip is in good condition, and the hickory shaft sports a nice aged patina...

DESCRIPTION: A fine Chinese boxwood water-well basket toggle, intricately carved in an acorn shape with a realistic and detailed basket weave pattern with carved wood rim. The arched overhead handle has a free-carved wood ring attached; the interior is hollowed out. Excellent condition, a beautiful toggle, 19th C. For a similar example see: Schuyler Cammann, Substance and Symbol in Chinese Toggles, #188, p.228. DIMENSIONS: 1-3/4” high.

Finely crafted, delicately carved Japanese wood netsuke, depicting a Toad, late 19th/early 20th century period. Size; Dimensions are 2"L x 1.25"H. Condition Report; Fair condition, age crack to the side.

This old Chinese hand made carpenters tool would have been used as a snapline just as the western metal chalk box and line are used today. Such tools were often hand made and passed from father to son for generations. This particular one has a small antler for a plumbob.

Large Prehistoric Bronze Age Korean Arrowhead of a scarce type and size illustrated in the catalogue: The 29th United Association of the University Museums of Korea Exhibition - Korea's Bow and Arrow. There are also similar examples of early Korean arrowheads in the December 1934 Transactions of the Korea Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. 1500 - 300 BCE. 6 inches (15 cm).

Chinese late Qing dynasty red silk temple hanging or altar frontispiece embroidered in metallic-couched and polychrome silk threads. A horizontal panel across the top holds seven figures standing among foliage. The lower section is embroidered with two phoenix birds among leafy flowers. The red silk panels are bordered in dark blue ground with metallic shou (longevity) symbols alternating with flowers. The borders are edged in black silk. Late 19th century...

Elegant, little distorted half cylinder shaped kutsugata tea bowl with flaring lip made of light, coarse, unrefined Mino clay.

The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical, glossy black iron oxide glaze inside and outside, leaving an unglazed 'window' on one side.

One 'window' is decorated with circles squares and lines in iron oxide glaze which has been covered with a clear ash and feldspar glaze...

Charming round monochrome vase with gorgeous rich oxblood/cranberry colored small speckled glaze. Lip has slight white ring, adding character to this small decorative piece.

18th Century (Qing Dynasty)

A magnificent Song dynasty Chizhou large basin, rounded side with flattened rim and unglazed base, basin decorated with painted iron brown of large fish motif at the center, also there is flower and weave motif, outer wall covered with iron brown motif.
Basin is in good condition with fine star crack to the rim, no chip, no restoration. few very minor glaze fritt / nick.
Size: 47 cm diameter, 12.7 cm height.

Meiji period, 1868-1912

Shallow bowl-shaped dish is raised on a tall foot and is decorated in underglaze blue with a branch of cherry blossoms encircling the interior. The painting is well-executed and the image is possibly based on a textile design. The underside is painted with three chrysanthemum sprays and the foot is decorated with the characteristic comb tooth pattern. Dish is glazed overall in a clear glaze leaving only the footring unglazed exposing the fine porcelain paste...

Japanese Meiji Period kuchi-e (magazine frontispiece) woodblock print by Kaburagi Kiyokata (1878-1972) titled "Gathering Shellfish" dated 1910. The print depicts two beauties at the seashore. Two cups of tea and an assortment of sea shells are beside them. One beauty holds a long pipe. A Japanese-style painter, Kiyokata was a pupil of Mizuno Toshikata. Measures just under 11" x 8 3/8"...

Chinese Tang dynasty Changsha bowl. 13 cm diameter, there is some small chipped at the rim. Free from any repair.

19th century small wooden netsuke (works as ojime as well) carved as seated Zen Patriarch Daruma enveloped in his monastic robe. According to a legend he had fallen into deep trance, and sat meditating without moving for 9 years, so his feet withered. Skillfully carved out of ichii (yew wood) in characteristic Hida school style with clever use of wood color and structure to add to the charm of the piece. Nice patina, in great condition. Height 13/16 inches.

Jurōjin / Gama Deity of Good Luck. Painted with ink and pigments on silk. Signed Tosa no mori Fujiwara Mitsusada and sealed. It is attributed to Tosa Mitsusada.
