Chinese Neolithic Qijia Culture Cord-Impressed Pottery Jar
This jar was made some 4,000 years ago by peoples of the Neolithic Qijia Culture (c. 2050 - 1700 BC), in the north of China, what is now eastern Gansu province. They produced a variety of pottery vessels including cord-impressed pottery of many shapes and sizes. This particular example is made from a coarse gritty clay and more "heavily-potted" than some. This Dark blue and white towel is 11 1/2" by 16 1/2" with sides hand hemmed. It has a few light brown stains in two places. This is a great size for a table mat or as a guest towel. The pattern and color are pleasing to the eye. C.1840
19th century repousse Chinese silver sew-on clothing ornament in a shape of a Chinese sage riding a mythical qilin. During Qing Dynasty silver figures of traditional mythical characters were sewn onto clothing and hats for decoration. Nicely made from low grade silver, small holes around perimeter for sewing onto clothes, will look much better once tarnish is cleaned. Height 1.83 inches.

This ancient Egyptian Scarab, c. 1250 BC, is from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). It is 7/16” long (11 mm) and made of steatite, an easy-to-carve stone that hardens when heated. Scarabs empowered life and resurrection and were often placed under mummy wrappings to protect the body and help it resurrect. This Scarab comes in a jewelry display cup. Offered is a very lovely, antique, 12 tube Pharmacy Apothecary Suppository Mold, circa 1880. This example measures 9.5 inches long x 1.75 inches wide x 1 inch high and weighs more than 4 pounds. I believe it is made of bronze and is plated in a nickel finish.

Vintage Chinese wooden stand of irregular shape with carved indentations: judging by their shape the stand was fitted for a carving (most probably jade) of a resting animal. Beautiful dense rosewood with wonderful patina, in excellent condition. Length of the top 2.8 inches, maximum width at the top 1.3 inches, height 0.7 inches.

The two points carved in scarce translucent hardstone, not silex. They can probably be dated to the 2nd.-1st. millenium BC. Very hard material and amazing that they could manage to make such refined artifacts of this size...

A nice smaller stamp seal in a fine stone, engraved with a cross-linear grid-like pattern. The fine engraving of the base is a tell-tale for the late manifacture, Levantine, c. 2nd. millenium BC.

Spectacular and rare sterling silver souvenir spoon by Tiffany & Co. The spoon commemorates Commodore George Dewey's 1898 victory at the Battle of Manila during the Spanish-American War. The handle is decorated with a bust of Dewey encircled by a laurel wreath. The wreath is tied with a ribbon which cascades down the stem of the spoon and bears the words "Manila May 1st 1898". The stem is further decorated with seaweed, four stars signifying Dewey's rank, and an anchor...

Lot consists of a nicely engraved spindlewhorl, a cure and intact pottery bird whistle, a stone head and a scarce pottery mould for casting a head.

Hand carved giltwood letter "G", unusual for being an italic letter and for the sides having contrasting black sand paint decoration. Gilt letters and numbers from 19th century trade signs have great graphic appeal and offer a fun opportunity to try to put together your name or initials.

18th Century Chinese Kangxi period Blue and White Porcelain deep scalloped rim Sauce Dish, Ca. 1661-1722, 4 1/8" diameter, 3/4" high, underglaze blue design of 8 panels of alternating with men fishing and Peony floral branches in the wide outer rim, and old man walking with tree branch tall walking stick on the river embankment in the center. Very tight glaze hairline on the top of the Pagoda design less than 1/2" long.
An early classic style 2 tical bronze Toe beast Opium weight, Burma, c. 1600-1630.
Nice weight for it’s type in the old classical style featuring the tall octagonal base, depicting a ‘Toe’ or lionbeast – a mythical animal.

A porcelain plate decorated with floral sprigs and bouquets with a shaped rim decorated with gilt dentil edge marked on the underside with a “B” in underglaze blue. 9 inch (23 cm) diameter. This short lived porcelain factory, roughly 1776-1781, had the Duc d’Orleans (cousin of the King Louis XVI) as its patron.
Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Some wear to the gilding and a little stacking wear.
A small lobed Arita porcelain bowl decorated with scrolling karakusa. The interior with the shochikubai, the three friends of winter. The base has a four-character Fuki Choshun, "good fortune and long life" mark. Late 18th or early 19th century.

Taisho (1920s) lacquered wood kogo (box for incense during tea ceremony) in a shape of a drum . Elegant object in Japanese taste, wonderful lacquer work, two parts fit perfectly, in great condition, a couple of scrathes on the top. Diameter 1.86 inches.
Sugar bowl and lid, an early piece from the Boch manufacture in Luxembourg. Urn-shaped, with a stylized tulip border, the sides with mask “handles”, all in the Empire style of the late 18th / early 19th century. The base with the impressed circle mark BOCH A (LUXEMBOURG) that was in use 1813-1835. Height "5 ¼ / 13.3 cm. Condition: bowl with hairlines, repair to the lid.

The actor died at age 60. He is shown holding a Buddhist sutra and his “death poem” in is cursive script above his head.
Signed Utagawa Toyosai, dated: 1903, fine impression and color, left margin slightly trimmed, small brown spot above sutra page, original paper backing possibly from time of issue.
