Late 19th century wooden netsuke of an awabi - an abalone shell with edible mollusk in it forming the bottom. Skillfully carved out of chosen matsu (Korean pine wood) inmodified ittobori (one cut) style characteristic of Hida school of netsuke carvers with clever use of wood grain as element of design. Wonderful piece in Japanese taste (both aesthetic and culinary), superb quality carving of hard shell and soft animal tissue, beautiful patina. Length 1.44 inches.

A Chinese White Glazed Ewer. Circa, 10th-13th Century, Song Dynasty.

Moulded horizontally in two sections, its rounded body rises from a short straight foot, tapering to its shoulders to a slightly waisted neck onto a flanged upper rim. Its body is decorated with carved downward facing petals with an applied strap handle, opposite its curved spout. Created for slaked lime, a component for the social practice of chewing “Betelnut”. Its globular form resembles an areca nut with a stylized overhead handle covered in a green and cream glaze. Its rounded body has a circular hole intended to extract lime, which will be then deposited on a betel leaf.

Green-glazed stonewares from Zhejiang province were widely exported to the Philippines, Indonesia and mainland south-east Asia. Local potters emulated the Chinese wares, and by the 14th century, Thailand and Vietnam had developed successful ‘celadon’ industries of their own. 23054816 Beautiful jeweled Crown Milano sweet meat. The piece has a silver plate lid with turtle. The swirled rib jar has 5 jeweled starbursts over the scrolled medallions. There are no missing jewels. The jar is 4 ½ inches in diameter and 4 3/4 inches tall. The jar is unmarked.
Republic period, 1940s or earlier, semi translucent jade brush washer, or possibly a snuff tray, in an unusual oval shape with a small carved flower button in the center. The jade has a lovely soft polished surface which is always rare to find. Color is best described as white jade with a pale celadon tint and, for presentation; we have it resting on a white jade bi from a later date. Both are included in the sale.
