Working out of San Miguel de Allende, Carmen Beckmann is one of the “second generation” (if I may be allowed the term here) designer / silversmiths who contributed to Mexico’s 20th c. Silver Renaissance. In her work, Beckmann is often inspired by ancient Maya and Aztec motifs to which she adds her unique modernist “twist” - quite successfully in my opinion at least...

From a private collection, this is a stunning sterling necklace and two bracelets sold at the Rancho Alegre, the largest silver shop in Taxco during the 1960s-70s. The designer initials are TRM . I do not know who this silversmith is, however, they sold their work at the Rancho Alegre. This smashing set consists of a 17" necklace and two 8" bracelets. The pieces are all 3/4" wide and in fine original condition. There are NO dings or dents to the balls or domes...

Without a doubt the “queen” of vintage Mexican silver jewelry, Matilde Poulat was an exceptional designer and, in my humble opinion, one of the country’s artists who, in their work, expressed the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. Her highly textured repoussage allows us to follow the silversmith’s hand as it slides over the metal thus affording us, to an extent, a glimpse of the creative process...

This iconic tour-de-force Antonio Pineda bracelet pulls out all the stops. This design graces the cover of "Silver Seduction : The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda".

Weighing in at a staggering 222.5 grams, this bracelet is composed of alternating trapezoidal silver panels tipped with onyx. The onyx gemstones are hand-cut and polished, and the panels are pin-hinged. This is an amazing piece, executed in almost pure (97%) silver...

This is my favorite bracelet made by Erika Hult in the Mexican Silver Renaissance. Properly hallmarked as shown and is 6 7/8th inches long. Curves brilliantly around the wrist and has a weight of 100 grams of quality. The design has a big presence with 1.25in. of height. She studied at the Parsons School of Design in Paris as did Hubert Harmon. She signed her work with the name of RIC.

In the last couple of years I found myself drawn closer and closer to the jewelry created by the Los Ballesteros workshop. I am especially attracted to their “mask” pieces in all the forms they can be found as well as to what I like to call their “hinged bangle” bracelets. I consider both kinds the absolute jewel in the taller’s creative crown and it seems that there is always something new and different to discover...

Matilde Poulat was known for her reliquary silver work. She made beautiful crosses with ornate chain and statues adorned with stones. This cross and chain necklace has the block letters MATL on both the chain and the cross center piece. The chain measures 21 in. long with the drop being 2 1/8th inches tall. This chain is featured in the book MEXICAN JEWELRY BY MARY L. DAVIS AND GRETA PACK. Here it was used as a choice to display a cross. Each link is embedded with a branch of coral...

Following in the tradition of Mexico City “jeweled” jewelry closely associated with Matilde Poulat, this Mexican Deco silver and amethyst cross pendant necklace is not signed for maker yet its rich patina, beautiful stones and exceptional chain more than compensate for the absence. I could hardly exaggerate how rare it is to find a repousse chain of this beauty, let alone one adorned with richly colored amethyst cabs. The stones’ circular shape is cleverly reflected in the beading on the c...

A wonderful Aztec design 940 silver pin with 5 balls and 5 dangles by Hector Aguilar. I have never seen this pin before and I have not found it in any books so believe it to be quite rare. It measures 1 3/4" long and 1 3/8" wide.It is in fine original condition but the safety is missing on the pin clasp so it is currently just a "C" clasp. Although it holds on clothing as it is now, it would be best to replace the safety catch to make it more secure. This can be easily done by a jeweler. The reve...
