A stunning European, probably French, sideboard/cabinet adorned with carved griffins, urns and rosettes in the Aesthetic Movement style. Circa 1880-1890s. Size: 56.5 inches length x 20 inches depth x 44.25 inches height. Solid oak with a reddish orange marble top ( a later replacement). There are two hidden frieze drawers with rosettes above a double door cabinet, carved with griffin handled urn motifs.

Of large size, and unusual form, this tramp art box contains two drawers and has a lift top revealing a section slightly deeper than the drawers. The top section is 1 1/2" deep, and the drawers are 1 1/4" deep. The lift top section has a mirror built into the top. The box measures 14" x 10 1/4" and is roughly 12 1/2" high to top of finial. Pair of silver candlesticks, ca 1890, by Herman Sudfeld, fully marked with .800 silver standard and Sudfeld's name and monogram. Measure 16" high, 35 troy ounces. Gendarme of course refers to the French policemans hat which is the same as Napoleons classic chapeau. High in the center with a gentle slope that finishes in a crisp point at the corners. I was fortunate to snag this pair at a large outdoor show south of Paris. The competition is fierce at these hugs shows and most chairs have been bought up before I get a shot at them. This lovely French nailed head French Club chair could be the model of what all the people trying to copy French Club chairs would want to use.
