The box is so subtle outside, that until very close, and at the correct angle, it simply looks black. Then one sees the cherry blossoms covering the entire outside, in the slightest texture only...

A moon rises behind the silhouette of a ragged tree by Kimura Hyakuboku enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated 1934 and titled Rokagami. Bordered in soft gray silk with dark wood rollers suiting the scene. It is 21-1/2 x 69 inches (54.5 x 175 cm) Kimura Hyakuboku (Shunzo) was born in Tokyo in 1884. While attending Kyoto University, he found himself attracted to Zen, and left the prestigious School to travel the Buddhist path...

An exquisite Lacquer Tray decorated with a spray of flowering Azalea in gold powder with mother of pearl, ceramic and lead inlays. Large kirigane flakes of solid gold decorate the petals. It is enclosed in a wooden box titled Tsutsuji Maki-e Nagatebon (Azalea Makie-e Tray). It is quite large at 19-1/2 x 14-1/2 x 2 inches (49.5 x 37 x 4.5 cm) and is in fine condition, dating from teh later Meiji to early Taisho period (1895-1915).

Japanese shin hanga woodblock print by Shoda Koho (1871-1946) titled "A Bridge in the Rainy Season." This image was originally printed by Hasegawa circa 1910-1920. This lifetime impression was published after the name change from Hasegawa to Nishinomaya Yosaku and dates circa 1936-early 1940s. The Nishinomaya publisher’s seal is in the lower right margin. Measuring 5 1/2" square and 8 1/2" high to top of handle, this Tabako Bon, or tobacco box, is lacquer over wood, with brass fittings, round lidded container, and hibachi. The one large drawer contains the lidded brass container and an open compartment behind it, and the other two drawers fit the depth of the case. The hibachi on top may be removed, and locks in when turned, so that the entire piece may be carried by the handle...

A rarely encountered occupation era original Japanese shin hanga woodblock print titled "Tanigumi Temple, Mino" by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) dated in the lower left margin Showa 22 (1947). The artist's black ink signature and red seal are at the lower left corner of the image. The 6mm circular seal of the publisher Watanabe (used 1946-1957) is at the lower right corner. Paper size: 15"V x 10 1/4"H (image size: slightly over 14 1/4"H x 9 1/2"V). Very good overall condition...

This lovely 19th century piece came from a Dutch private collection where it has been since the 1980's. It is 55 cm high and at the base it measures 25x25 cm. It has normal age wear and a wonderful old patina.

A raw earthen bottle hand formed for sake and engraved with a poem by Otagaki Rengetsu. It is 5-1/4 inches (13.5 cm) tall and in fine condition. The poem reads:
Fuyubata no On the Daikon Leaves
Oone no kuki ni In a winter field
Shimo Sae Te Frost gleams
Asatode Samushi Going out in the morning I feel cold
Okazaki no sato Here in Okazaki village

A complete old Tibetan ladies purse made of Yak leather and inlaid with silver and gilt carvings with a center piece of Turquoise. The front has carvings of two fish (representing the beginning of life)and flower design. The back has a center tree design. There is a silver woven chain attached to the top for carrying. An unusual image of a towering stone among pines by Yasuda Hanpo enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated 1935. It is titled Sosui Manken (In the shade of Towering Trees. Light pigment and ink on paper in a cloud-patterned satin border with large bone rollers. 46.5 x 207 cm (18-1/2 x 82 inches) and is in exceptional condition.
Yasuda Hanpo (1889-1947) was a Nanga artist studied under Mizuta Chikuho and Himejima Chikugai...

A fine antique Greek pottery kylix a grand tour example c.1890. Decorated in Classic greek figures two handles and pedestal stand. Measuring 18 x 14 x 8 inches. A beautiful example would enhance any interior.

Japanese literati painting finely detailed in the Chinese style with a snowy mountainous landscape scene featuring houses, figures, a waterfall, and gnarled trees. An inscription at the upper right is signed “Sorin Gaishi,” the pseudonym for Takaku Aigai (1796-1843), followed by two red artist seals. Takaku Aigai was a prominent Nanga School artist and a protégé of Tani Buncho...
