Beautifully carved, this soapstone figure really captures the essence of the stately Polar Bear. He stands 3 3/4" high, 8 1/4" wide, and is 4 3/4" deep, and weighs roughly 4 pounds and 4 ounces. The soapstone is a mottled brown/green, with spots of black, rust, and tan, and has black inlaid eyes. The character Kotobuki followed by a playful verse crying Watashiya kyujukyu made (Longevity, I live to 99). Ink on paper enclosed in a subtle cloth border befitting Zen art. It is stamped Taishitsu (his art name) and enclosed in the original signed wooden box with the same inscription on the lid. The scroll measures 10 by 73 inches (26.5 x 185 cm). Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 17". This is an example of the "Naruko-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The artisan was Moriya Kazuo, who was born on Septemeber 4th, 1928 (Showa 3.)
