Finely cast in solid bronze, this pair of Komainu figures, also referred to as Shishi or guardian lions, are diminutive in size, measuring 3 1/8" high x 3", but maintain the fierce and powerful demeanor for which they are known. They have the traditional stance, and one has an open mouth, the other closed, with richly sculpted manes and tails. The patina is very dark, with some verdigris evident in the crevasses, and very light wear where they were handled...

Dating to the 19th century, or late Qing, this Rose Medallion platter was made for the export market and features the traditional images of maidens, birds, flowers, and foliage, in six vignettes separated by green and rose foliate designs, highlighted with gold. A very unusual Meiji period Suzuri Bako with cherry blossoms in black on black outside, a crescent silver moon rising beyond crashing gold waves within. The box is so subtle outside, that until very close, and at the correct angle, it simply looks black. Then one sees the cherry blossoms covering the entire outside, in the slightest texture only...

Japanese shin hanga woodblock print by Shoda Koho (1871-1946) titled "A Bridge in the Rainy Season." This image was originally printed by Hasegawa circa 1910-1920. This lifetime impression was published after the name change from Hasegawa to Nishinomaya Yosaku and dates circa 1936-early 1940s. The Nishinomaya publisher’s seal is in the lower right margin. Measuring 5 1/2" square and 8 1/2" high to top of handle, this Tabako Bon, or tobacco box, is lacquer over wood, with brass fittings, round lidded container, and hibachi. The one large drawer contains the lidded brass container and an open compartment behind it, and the other two drawers fit the depth of the case. The hibachi on top may be removed, and locks in when turned, so that the entire piece may be carried by the handle...

A rarely encountered occupation era original Japanese shin hanga woodblock print titled "Tanigumi Temple, Mino" by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) dated in the lower left margin Showa 22 (1947). The artist's black ink signature and red seal are at the lower left corner of the image. The 6mm circular seal of the publisher Watanabe (used 1946-1957) is at the lower right corner. This lovely 19th century piece came from a Dutch private collection where it has been since the 1980's. It is 55 cm high and at the base it measures 25x25 cm. It has normal age wear and a wonderful old patina.

A raw earthen bottle hand formed for sake and engraved with a poem by Otagaki Rengetsu. It is 5-1/4 inches (13.5 cm) tall and in fine condition. The poem reads:
Fuyubata no On the Daikon Leaves
Oone no kuki ni In a winter field
Shimo Sae Te Frost gleams
Asatode Samushi Going out in the morning I feel cold
Okazaki no sato Here in Okazaki village

Japanese Meiji period painting on silk finely rendered with three birds perched on a tree branch set against a rising full moon. Signed “Gokyo” (artist unidentified) with a red seal below. Appears to date from the 19th century to circa 1900. Measures 47”V x 19 3/4”H. A complete old Tibetan ladies purse made of Yak leather and inlaid with silver and gilt carvings with a center piece of Turquoise. The front has carvings of two fish (representing the beginning of life)and flower design. The back has a center tree design. There is a silver woven chain attached to the top for carrying. A dramatic pair of large trays　decorated with silver characters for sun and moon on dynamic black and red surfaces. Each comes in the original wooden box made by craftsmen at the Yabashi Studio in Gifu prefecture. They are 47 cm square and in fine condition.

An unusual image of a towering stone among pines by Yasuda Hanpo enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated 1935. It is titled Sosui Manken (In the shade of Towering Trees. Light pigment and ink on paper in a cloud-patterned satin border with large bone rollers. 46.5 x 207 cm (18-1/2 x 82 inches) and is in exceptional condition.
