For over 1000 years the Chinese have used Bamboo Shoots for the art of divination, forecasting the future. The shoot are tossed on a table or to the ground. The landing position of the shoots is the determining factor. This pair of divination shoots is over 200 years old.

Description: A natural root wood stand was shaped in a stylized form. Rich in darkened brownish tone, the gnarled stand was kept in original condition without any defects. A small piece maybe but was really rare when the old characteristics were obvious-especially to a wood stand. Date: 19th century, Height: 9.5cm

This old Japanese hook would have been suspended over the hearth and used to hang cooking pots over the fire. Obviously carved by the original owner/user, this pothook or jizai kagi is heavily grooved from many years of use. The attached rope is probably a replacement to the original rope. It has been knotted into place for some years and I decided not to attempt to remove it.

A demure image of grace and youth; this is a fine full sized Bunraku theater puppet dating from the first half of the 20th century; one of two from a private collection we are currently offering. Description: A scholar bronze water basin was in lovely pumpkin shape. Covered with typical old patina on the surface and left pigment between the lobes, the item was kept in very good condition except some minor dents which was not unusual to an old piece. One later made dip was accompanied with this piece as a perfect match. Date: 18th/19th Century. Width: 5.3cm, Weight: 51gram.

A Kutani Kaburagi lidded bowl painted with symbols of prosperity and longevity in multi-colored enamels and gold. The Golden Hammer (uchide-no-kozuchi) that serves as the handle for the lid, is the symbol of Daitoku, one of the 7 lucky gods. Legend has it, if you shake the hammer, it brings wealth. Around the outer bowl, there are storks (symbols of longevity) nestled inside stylized pine needle formations...

This style of Rattan helmet was worn by all foot soldiers during the Qing Dynasty. This helmet retains traces of its original painted symbols, no longer readable, it is presumed that they indicated specific troop or brigade to which the owner belonged.

Description: An elegant porcelain water basin was in light celadon tint. In a rolled lip, shallow belly and flat but well shaped foot ring, the water basin had a beautiful image with strong scholar mood. Natural ice cracks were yielded under the glaze at the bottom of the basin when one minor glaze burst had happened in the cavetto due to firing. Brownish finish was preserved at the foot ring. Date: Early Qing period(17th-18th century), Width: 11cm

Used by Tibetan Buddhist Monks and Priests, this old prayer wheel is adorned with an ornate silk fringed top. The copper barrel has a narrow silver collar with 3 coral beads and a traditional design is pressed into the silver bottom. The heavy lead weight will keep the prayer wheel spinning smoothly atop the hand hewn wooden handle. This prayer wheel is approximately 12 inches long.

In pure black patina which was caused from long time of age, the censer was in rarely found simple form. Chinese late Qing to early Republic period ceramic modeled container shaped like a "ha ma," or toad, with a hollow body and flat base covered in a monochrome pearl glaze with a seeded finish. Measures about 10 ½”L x 9 ¼”W x 6”H. There are some old surface cracks visible. The back section appears to have been restored and the gray areas in the pearl glaze appear to be old restorations which were executed in China...

This is a Song dynasty qingbai appliqué dragon funerary vase in high relief. It has a short splay foot rim, then everted upward to a u-shaped body with a slight tilted wide shoulder and with a finger pinched moulded rim. From the center of the shoulder rises a long neck winding upward edges, like the ancient tower of Babylon, towards what looks like a garlic head rim. It has a five claws dragon coiling round the neck of the vase chasing after the flaming pearl in the sky...

This is a Yuan dynasty celadon vase with a three claws dragon and a phoenix motif flying in the sky. The phoenix is very elegantly engraved with a beautiful body, with a pair of wide spreading wings and with the tail floating in the sky. The celadon vase stands on a short splay shallow recessed foot rim. From the foot rim it everted upwards into a bulbous body with short step shoulder and then everted upwards to a slightly flared up mouth rim and the with a high lips which is slightly everted in...

Description: A northern stoneware was intriguingly applied with russet oil-spots glaze. In a lovely size, the bowl was molded regularly in well proportion. While with a charming glaze effects on the inner and outer surface, the bowl’s foot ring was unglazed and was revealed with the meticulously applied protection coating on the body clay. The sandy-feel protection slip cracked in some way and reveal the white clay underneath. Date: Jin to Yuan period(13th-14th century) Width: 8.2cm.

Description: A black-glazed tea bowl was uniquely shaped in a stout way. Molded by a narrowed wall, the foot had a rolled ring at the bottom. Having been cleaned professionally though, the luster of the glaze was retrospective when subtle brownish tint was amid the evenly applied black glaze. Date: Jin to Yuan period, Provenance: Tinlin kiln Fujiang Province. Width: 11.5cm, Height: 5.7cm.

An intricate age darkened Keyaki (elm) carving of two dragons vying for dominance in a sea of clouds, glass eyes glowing softly in the rich red wood. Dating from the later 19th century, the carving is 49 inches (125 cm) long, 4 x 1-1/2 inches (9.5 x 3.5 cm). It is overall in fine condition with some inevitable abrasions due to time. The tennons on both ends indicate this was made to be inserted between two pillars, and was likely the transom over a Buddhist altar.

A 19th century (early Meiji) period Buddhist image we believe to be a thousand armed version of Yakushi Nyorai accompanied by two sages carved entirely of fragrant sandalwood on a gilded wooden base. The group is in total 15-1/2 inches (39 cm) tall, the image alone 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) tall. Both sages are missing an arm, as well as one lotus blossom rising from the wave patterned base. The holy figure itself also once had a greater number of arms, which have been lost over the last 150 years...

This is a charming lobed shaped tea-pot standing on four small individual feet. On one side it has a painting of a pair of sparrow in a blooming lotus pond. On the other side, it has a poem written on it. Circa. early Chinese Republic period 1940s-1950s.

No hairline crack, glaze fritting, damage, repair or restoration. The tea-pot is in good condition.

By typical characteristics of sticking-rice-like body clay which revealed at the lower portion of the boxes and the flat foot rings, the ware’s glaze was kept in very good condition.
On the surface, clear and crispy patterns were beautifully defined. Hand-crafted knobs were skillfully added on the top of the caps.

A beautiful and rare glass stupa from the Pyu area.Most of the glass has turned into a beautiful iridescent color which gives a wonderful feeling to this piece. The stupa is unusual as it has a hollow opening in the center. Age: 100 AD. Size: H. 1.9cm. W. At the base. 1.9cm. Condition: A small piece is missing at the base and because it is iridescent at the part also it probably was made that way.
