An exceptional and very rare to find early Taxco repousse bracelet, I am used to similar pieces - as rarely as they come up - hailing from Mexico City where Matilde Poulat also developed her style. Yet this one is clearly marked "Taxco" and though its design and the techniques used remind me of similar work done by P.Ochoa, the bracelet at hand is not signed for maker...

Signed by one of the best repousse makers of Mexico's 20th c. Silver Renaissance who unfortunately remains still unidentified, this clamper draws on the country's rich pre-Colombian past and is in fact based on a Los Castillo design, if I am not mistaken. Shaped like an imposing Maya or Aztec warrior with the most impressive headdress of feathers and gems the two wings meet at the front with the figures looking in different directions...

One of the best designs in early Mexican repousse work, the "feathers" makes for divine necklaces because of the gracious way the two halves of the piece meet at the center front - just take a look at the beauty of the swirls and twists and the playful, flirty way they touch yet at the same time "turn the back" on each other... Until well into the 20th c. conducting one's own archaelogical dig was not prohibited in Mexico - both Spratling and Davis are known to have engaged in personal digs and their collections were frequently enriched by the fruits of those excavations. I believe the stone beads in the neckl...

One of the best repousse figural brooches I have had over the years this is an early, stunning bird studded with blue and greenish blue turquoise cabochons.
