It is firing into burning charcoal in the kiln, so there are complicated atmosphere, oxidation and reduction. Well proportioned and exceptionally light in the hand, this lovely tea bowl features a stylized depiction of a horse in stride in what appears to be a brown ferrous glaze on a background of ash glaze (灰油 hai-yu). A creation of Kyoto potter Kimura Moriyasu, this is a difficult style to perform, with results dependent on how the clay and glazes interact when exposed to the specific firing condition in the kiln.

A beautiful Shigaraki Chaire Tea urn by Matsuo Takaaki enclosed in the original signed wooden box measuring 5.5 cm (2 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3 inches) tall in excellent condition. Matsuo Takaaki was born in Yokohama in 1938. He began studies under Tsuji Seimei at Renkoji in 1960 where he trained for over 15 years. Wonderful Tobe Chawan with a fantastic glaze, made by the great 3rd Rakuzan Tamai (1924-1990) about 50 years ago. Rakuzan Tamai was accepted several times at the Nitten Exhibition in Japan. His work is part of the imperial houshold as well.

In mid 18th century Tobe ware was started in Ehime prefecture, Japan, and in the end of the 19th century, there was an increase in the production of tableware for export to South East Asia. Nowadays such type of Chawan is hard to find.

Large, robust Shigaraki chaire by internationally recognized potter, Kanzaki Shiho. Fired for 10 days in an anagama kiln, this Shigaraki chaire has a wonderful coating of ash with some rich hi-iro fire color on the back and foot. The chaire is signed on the foot and comes complete with its shifuku, silk bag, lid and signed box. The chaire measures 8cm x 7.6cm and is in its original condition.

Distinctly fired mizusashi resembling stacked stones, this Sueki influenced Shigaraki mizusashi is absolutely timeless having the appearance of a piece medieval pot or a modern, abstract sculpture based on stones placed on top of one another.
