An exquisite hand-formed koro, the tri-legged form hammered from a single sheet of copper gilded with gold and signed on the base Goro. The top is created in the same manner pierced with three holes, and it has an insert of the same alloy to keep heat away from the softly gleaming body. Enigmatic lines score the martian landscape of this large slab platter by innovative Japanese artist Teramoto Mamoru enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Wow I need that! is all I could say the first time I saw this piece by Furutani Taketoshi while visiting the Churokuen Kiln early this year. The tendrils of natural ash glaze wrap around the simplified form like the roots of some ancient Shinboku (God Tree). It is unpretentious, but stands out clearly as a masterpiece by this very talented young potter. Large jar or vase by Kirk Mangus (American, 1952-2013) free form with slip and incised decoration in the form of two fishes (one large, one small, the large fish going after the small of course). Signed "Mangus" and inscribed "xox" bottom. Probably from the late eighties but could be earlier. Roughly 9" high and 8" across. Kirk Mangus is an internationally recognized American artist and ceramicist.

Rivulets like stalagmitic sprouts weap from the crystallized walls of this squat Tsubo by Tsukigata Nahiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Oni-Shino Tsubo Hanaire.  Pealed back lunettes reveal the rough clay surface beneath, adding a sense of drama to the piece; putting it firmly in the natural world where asymmetry and imperfection reign.  A seminal work by this important artist whose influence will be felt for coming generations...
