An ode to Mexico’s ancient crafts this “tribal” necklace wrought in sterling silver with bone links and agate beads bears the signature of Reveriano (Reveri) Castillo. Though the Castillos did, on occasion, incorporate Aztec and Maya artifacts and beads in their jewelry, I believe that here the materials used are contemporary to the designer but brought together is such a way as to evoke ancient types of personal adornment...

A nice 2-1/2" x 2-1/4" sterling silver layered brooch with safety catch in the form of a pair of young deer c1930s-40s. Marked simply STERLING, one deer is silver and the other has a rose gold wash over the silver. It weighs 14.2 grams and it is in excellent original condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs. Measuring 27" long, this 940 sterling silver & copper necklace was designed c. 1940-50's by Taxco, Mexico artist Hector Aguilar (1905-86). The center disc is 1 1/2" wide graduating to 1/2" at the back. Weight is 124 grams. Beautiful condition & patina. Each disc is connected to the next with a silver rivet giving the design fluid movement. Signed TAXCO HA 940 eagle #9. A similar necklace is pictured on p. 140 of Silver Masters of Mexico by Penny Morrill.

"Prize winning piece which is made of four different metals and two stones" describes this Los Castillo pin in MEXICAN JEWELRY by Davis & Pack, p.188. It also appears on p.187 in WILLIAM SPRATLING and the MEXICAN SILVER RENAISSANCE as "Los Castillo, prize-winning cubist parrot broach". This famous pin was made in Mexico, c.1947. This necklace is signed Taxco 980 and while there is no artist attached to this work it is of exceptional quality. Thick silver, attached with rivets, and classic style set this Mexican silver necklace apart from others. It is 7/8ths inches tall for all three pieces. The weight is 92 grams for the necklace and 55 grams for the bracelet and earrings. The earrings have been professionally changed to pierced and the hallmark does show on their back side...

This brooch or pin is in the shape of a bow, made from blue and turquoise plique a jour (translucent) enamel with twisted wire work running through it. (The colors in the photographs may be deceptive, depending on your computer monitor). Taxco 980 signed pieces are always quality. This link is 118 grams heavy and is the closest thing to the Coco design of the Spratling original necklace which is so very, very rare. The Taxco 980 necklace is 20in. long and has a depth of 7/16th's giving it even more dimension. No dents or damage and kept lovingly through time.
