This is an exceptionally early, student work by the ultimately famous and important American-born artist who lived much of his life in Europe. A very old watercolor painting of a barefoot young man with traditional clothing and conical hat, unframed, 7" by 3", unsigned, dating to the mid 19th century. It could be by a local artist of the China Trade School, or perhaps by one of the rare expatriate artists who visited the region, on the order of George Chinnery.
