A good-sized example of the scarce work of Nagasaki, Japan-born artist JUNJI YAMASHITA (1940-), featuring Sacre Coeur church in Montmartre. The work is painted in a monochromatic palette of grayish brown, and a palette knife is used to spread around the paint. Note the skilled use of the palette knife in the lower right portion. Yamashita is known for his landscapes and still lifes, the most recent painted in a Post-Impressionist style...

Oil on canvas painting of autumnal trees with a few houses in the composition at center, 12" by 16" (20 1/2" by 24 1/2" in newer frame), signed at lower right in red and dated 1933 or 1939 by Hungarian artist JANOS LASZLO ALDOR (1895-1944). As the images of the reverse labels show, the artist was apparently misidentified by previous owners, including the Brand Library in Glendale, California. Aldor painted landscapes of his native land, as well as often elegant portraits and nudes...

From our European Collection, a fine 19th century original oil on panel by British painter and listed artist William Anslow Thornley (1857-1898), entitled "Moonlight on the Thames." Signed "Thornley" lower left.

Size and condition: 13 inches x 11 inches framed dimensions, approximately 10 inches x 8 inches unframed image size. This painting has been taken care of well, there is only some very minor age-related soiling and minor scuffing to the frame.

Fernand Leger, French,1881-1955. This stunning example of Fernand Leger's imagery at his early cubust period in the 1920's is pencil on paper. It is 21.5cm w by 25cm h in a beautiful frame 45cm w by 47.5cm h. It is signed lower left F. L. 20. Fernand Léger was born in 1881, the same year both Picasso and Braque were born, in Normandy; his father was a substantial cattle grazer. Fernand was trained as an architectural draughtsman and later worked as a professional retoucher of photographs...

A scarce oil on canvas PAINTING (not the usual prints seen), signed at lower left by the noted French 20th century impressionist painter CHARLES BLONDIN (1913-1991). Blondin was active in Paris in the post war years, painting and creating very popular editions of prints which he numbered and hand signed, and oil paintings as well. This work measures 8 3/4" by 10 1/2" (14 1/2" by 16" in appropriate mid century frame). Condition is excellent. Probably dates to late 1950's or early 1960's...

The work is signed at lower right "M M Cole" and is dated there 1981. On the reverse of the frame is written "Miriam '81", so, we likely have an American woman as the artist. Measurements are 18" by 22" and 21 1/2" by 25 1/2" as framed...

The view is of famously scenic Lake Como in northern Italy, with snow capped peaks in the distance. A few figures are present in the foreground, and the architecture along the lake shore fills the middle. The artist was born in Wisconsin and was in San Francisco by about 1860...

Oil on canvas, 18" by 22" (23 1/2" by 27 1/2" as framed), the subject the famous Paris opera house and the Cafe de la Paix at left, executed in the naive style of painters like Emile Blondel, Leon-Alphonse Quizet, and so forth, apparently unsigned, though the word "Lancel" on an awning could possibly be the artist's name. The painting dates to the post war period, likely the 1950's or early 1960's at latest, considering the style of the autos in the scene...
