Oil on linen laid on board, 16 1/4" by 23 1/4", the simple modern frame about 1 1/4" wide, signed at lower right by listed California woman artist M.E. HODGDON, not dated but likely before 1920. The painting recently came out of Maine, where it had possibly resided for decades, perhaps brought east by an early day traveler wanting a souvenir. The artist, MARY E. Circa 1970 oil on canvas, 16" by 12" (20 1/2" by 16 1/4" framed), signed at lower left "Joyce". The scene with yellow roses and oriental ceramic figure takes after artists such as Hovsep Pushman and others who in the first half of the 20th century favored such props in their still life works. This is evenly soiled, with some browned varnish too. Otherwise condition is good. The white frame shows some wear.

Ideal addition to kitchen or pantry area, a well-painted little still life of green and yellow zucchini squash, and an onion, 7 1/2" by 11 1/4" inside the linen mat, 11" by 15" framed, signed on the back of the canvas "Duffy '95". The framer's label is from Chicago so our artist may have been from Illinois. This is a decorative work and the skill of the artist is obvious. There is light wear to the frame. I had to open up the backing to find the signature and date.
