Watercolor on paper, unsigned, 9" by 5 1/2", (12 5/8" by 8 5/8" as framed), the subject a mansion's impressive doorway with Corinthian columns, hanging lantern, detailed cornices, balustraded balcony, and green shutters, with lush flowering plantings surrounding the entry. Unfortunately, this is unsigned. There are some framing notes on the reverse in old hand, including "Mrs. Buckingham", but there are no clues as to artist. The drawing was purchased in New England...
Watercolor on paper, 20 1/2" by 27 1/4" inside the mat (26 1/2" by 32 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right "Roy E. Swanson", dated there "84" This watercolor is by a skilled hand (see other works by him in my shop), though I cannot seem to find a listing for the artist. There is a listing for a RAY Swanson (Cowboy Artists of America), but this is not that artist...
For your Colorado ski cabin, a contemporary (maybe as early as the 1970's) watercolor and gouache painting, unsigned, featuring objects familiar to anyone who has gone skiing in the mountains: a packet of Kleenex for the runny noses, mittens/gloves, down jacket, lift ticket and ski trail map, tire chains, and rubber clasp to hold the skis together when walking back to the car. The work measures 18" by 14" (24" by 18" in black metal frame)...
Watercolor painting on heavy watercolor paper, 21" by 30" (32" by 40" framed), the subject a lake bordered by trees and low mountains, on a cloudy day, waterfowl taking wing at right, signed TRICIA KINNEY. This is a quality large size work in excellent condition. I do not see a listing for an artist by this name at the moment. The painting is nicely framed and is behind Plexiglas for easier, safer shipping. It needs to be re-mounted as it is slipping around behind the mat...
Watercolor painting of a young Native American girl of the Southwest, 17 1/2" by 14 3/4" (23 1/2" by 21" framed), signed at lower right (somewhat indecipherably) "Martchenko". This is a sensitive portrait by an obviously talented observer. Martchenko's works appear from time to time in Southern California. Born in Oregon, she studied under Sergei Bongart and at the Otis Art Institute. Portraiture seems to have been a favorite of the artist, in both oil and watercolor...
Watercolor on paper of a large ship at the dock, 13 1/2" by 17 1/4" (21" by 26" framed), signed in the image at lower left and also on the mat at lower right "Herbert Manasse", and titled "ENSENADA 'L.'C.I." on the mat at lower left. The artist is HERBERT MANASSE (1891-1965), who according to the AskArt listing was an artistically talented attorney. He was obviously quite familiar with the medium. Note the wet-on-wet technique in the sky...
Watercolor painting of a sunny meadow by the sea, vegetation partially obscuring a distant view to a coastline, 9 1/8" by 13 1/4" (16 1/2" by 20" in wood strip frame), signed at lower right by American artist HARRIET WINSLOW HAYDEN (1840-1926)--some give date of death as 1906. Hayden worked in both Massachusetts, and, later, in Colorado, where she became an active member of Denver-area art groups...
This is a nicely executed watercolor of a cathedral on the banks of a river, identified by an old pencil inscription on the reverse as "At Mantes on the Seine". Measuring 9 1/2" by 13 1/2" inside the mat opening and 15 1/2" by 20" as framed behind Plexiglas, the work appears to be unsigned. In the style of the times, the drawing was glued to a thin board, long ago...
Original antique watercolor floral botanical painting of a yellow flowering plant 19th century c.1850.
This lovely original watercolor is from a mid 19th century botanical watercolor album. Although unsigned it was clearly done by a highly skilled artist. The paper is Whatman watermarked and dated. . Presented matted with archival materials and framed.

Gouache and watercolor abstract painting, 10 1/2" by 7 1/2" (17 3/4" by 14" in quality ash wood, deep poster box-style contemporary framing), signed in pencil at lower right by artist ANN THORNYCROFT (1944-) and dated there 1992. The work is very light and ephemeral and would fit right into any modern-leaning setting. Thornycroft was born in England and educated in art there, but found herself in New York by 1969 and Venice, California by 1972, where she remains...
Highly impressionistic watercolor painting of a small boat in a foggy harbor, 14" by 20", unframed, signed at lower left by the listed American artist JOSEPH MARGULIES (1896-1984). Margulies was born in Vienna and by the 1920's was studying art in New York at the Art Students League, one of his instructors being Joseph Pennell. He also received training at the National Academy, Cooper Union, and in Europe...
Colorful watercolor on paper of a ceramic figure with copper pot and summer fruit, measuring 6 1/2" by 5 7/8" (13" by 12 3/4" as framed, no glass), likely the work of noted American artist FREDERIC GRANT (1886-1959). The work is apparently unsigned, but, on the original framing paper appears in a modern hand "BY FREDERICK GRANT"; originally there was also an old framer's sticker from Chicago but it has apparently dropped off since I purchased this...
Brooks Pettus (1918-2003) was a noted western American artist who passed away in Kennewick, Washington, leaving behind a large body of work in watercolor and oil that only recently appeared on the market. Pettus earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico, and spent time in Albuquerque and Taos in the early 1940's. New Mexico's artistically inspiring landscape stimulated Pettus' aesthetic sense as it has for countless others. Even though he became a professional engineer, mo...
Gouache on paper drawing of Wise Men on camels in a nocturne landscape, the bright star announcing the birth of Jesus, titled at bottom "Behold There Came Wise Men", 15" by 18 3/4" (22 1/4" by 28 1/2"as framed, without glass), apparently unsigned, but by a little-known California artist, Frederick Millson. This is an accomplished illustration drawing by a talented yet elusive artist about which there seems to be little known. It would make for an unusual Christmas gift. This and two other wo...
Original finely detailed gouache and watercolor on board painting (no glass) of two warring ships, the 38-gun frigate HMS Macedonian of the Royal Navy, and the 44-gun better protected USS United States, as they appeared in the epic battle of October 25, 1812. The Macedonian surrendered to the Americans, making her the second warship to surrender to the US during that war. The painting, signed at lower right by artist Gordon Bracher and dated 1965, might be after a Thomas Birch painting. Compa...

American Artists
This is the third watercolor and gouache painting that we recently acquired. All park scenes, all painted on a blue toned paper, nicely framed with archival materials. We are unsure who this artist was, most likely one of the mid 1930's American Illustrators. The image measures 8 1/4X5 1/4 inches. Unexamined out of the frame. Probably a view in Central Park N.Y.
A watercolor and white gouache painting on paperboard, 10" by 14", unframed, titled on reverse in pencil in old hand "On a Lonely Shore by Carl Oscar Borg". Nearby, another title is crossed out; seems to have read "On a Lonely Hill....". The artist is CARL OSCAR BORG (1879-1947), noted for his California and Southwest works. Borg was born in Sweden into modest circumstances. He showed early talent copying from books and painting houses, but went to London at 20 and was exposed to art current...
