At first glance most would think this a print, but it is guaranteed to be an original drawing. The work on paper, measuring 22" by 18", and 27" by 23" in contemporary gold framing, is signed at lower left in a flowing signature "Petzoldt", followed by "Mchn. 28" (Munich, 1928). The handwriting of the signature and overall nineteenth century appearance of the drawing suggests this could be 1828, but the paper would definitely appear to be of the 20th century...

Oil on canvasboard, 16" by 12" (19 1/2" by 15 1/2" as framed), the subject trees in flaming autumn colors along a quiet dirt forest road, signed at lower right "P.L. King", no date but likely circa late 1940's or 1950's. For a time I had thought it possible that this was a work of the noted American impressionist PAUL KING (1867-1947) but I no longer believe that to be the case, so I am offering it as simply an interesting impressionistic landscape...

Found in New Hampshire, and bearing the label of a contemporary Portland, Maine frame shop, a watercolor painting of an old barge grounded on the shore of a creek adjacent to a woodland, a small house in the distance. The 11" by 14" work (17 1/2" by 20" framed) is signed at lower left and dated there "80". The signature appears to read "Ranger", as in Henry Ward Ranger (1858-1916), a well-known American artist. This is a possibility but could be difficult to confirm...

Oil on small wood panel that appears to be an old cigar box lid, 8 1/2" by 4 1/2", (10 3/4" by 6 3/4" as framed), signed at lower right "Lily Vosburgh", the subject a church steeple in France, impressionistically rendered trees largely obscuring it. Affixed to the reverse is a typed 20th century label which reads "A small church in the south of France as painted by Lily Vosburgh in the 1930's", and below that "JB" AND "$22.50"...

Small oil on canvas laid on board painting of a street scene in Paris, the work somewhat resembling the familiar paintings of A. de Vity. It measures 15" by 11" framed and is not signed. Paintings of Paris streets are ever-popular. A ballpoint pen date on the reverse backing paper (3/24/72) gives some insight into when this painting was created. See other Parisian views in my shop.

This is a poetic Asian work, in grayish blues and white, the subject the cone of Mt. Fuji above a cloud deck. The painting measures 14 1/4" by 17" inside the overmat (21 1/2" by 24" as simply framed). The signature at lower left reads Kamemaru and the seal "Kame". I cannot see that this corresponds to a listed artist. The work is in the style of classic Japanese watercolor landscape painting, and is perhaps also inspired by the works of the modern master Yokoyama Taikan...

Oil on canvas painting of a scene in central Paris, including the Galleries Lafayette department store, signed at lower right by listed French artist V. GERNON. This mid 20th century work is painted in an impressionist style. The balanced composition, muted colors and flickering brush strokes make for a very attractive work. Note the many figures and rich architectural detail. Measurements are 24" by 30" (31" by 37" framed)...

A PAIR of paintings on canvas, each featuring hanging game birds after the hunt, each 20" by 16", unframed, each signed by the well-known American western artist HENRY H. CROSS (1837-1918). The use of green painted wood panel background suggests the artist was familiar with the artist William Harnett and his style. Cross was born in New York state and became well known in the 19th century as a painter of portraits of Native American luminaries of the time...

Oil on canvas, 27" by 30" (33" by 36" as framed), the subject the roiling waves, a headland visible in the distance, signed at lower right and, I think, dated there "40", by well listed American artist and illustrator FREDERIC TELLANDER (1878-1977). This is a good-sized work, offered most definitely in as-is condition...

Lovely antique oil signed at extreme lower right corner by the Dutch master artist JAN JACOB COENRAD SPOHLER (1837-1923), the subject a classic canal in summer, the scene including windmills, boats, houses, churches (Utrecht, Leiden?) and tiny figures. The work measures 8 1/2" by 13 1/2" (10 1/2" by 15 1/2" in older 20th century frame). The work is very typical of his paintings, many of which show ice skaters in the winter. Larger works have reached $40,000 at auction in the Netherlands...

Oil on canvas of what would appear to be a domestic family scene, measuring 28" by 31 1/2", unframed, signed at lower left in capital letters "GUYARD". There does not appear to be a listed artist who could be associated with this name, despite the fine skills demonstrated by the artist...

Oil on rectangular canvas overlain by an oval frame, 6 1/2" by 9 1/4", (10 3/4" by 12 3/4" as framed), apparently signed by amateur artist "Jennifer" at bottom center below the frame line, circa 1970's or 1980's, the subject ducks flying above a marsh. On the stretcher is written "Canvas Backs". The artist certainly had some talent. Watercolor on heavy watercolor paper, 8 1/2" by 11", unframed and with old mat still attached, signed at lower right "B. Singer" and dated there '53. This is a work of noted California painter BURR SINGER (1912-1992). Singer is an important California woman artist, fine oil works bringing to the upper four figures at recent auctions. Born in St. Louis, she exhibited around the country at the 1939 World's Fair in San Francisco, after studying at the Art Students League in New York and the Art ...

Watercolor and gouache on paper, 5 3/4" by 11 1/2", (10 1/2" by 16" as framed), signed at lower left by a talented and prolific Italian painter, I think one of a large group of painters going under the name "Gianni", possibly from the same family. Other works of such southern Italian scenes are signed M. Gianni. The auction houses I think have generally mixed up these late 19th/first half of the 20th century painters and the auction records are hopelessly tangled and inaccurate. This example see...

Oil on canvas street scene, most likely of Mexico, 18" by 24", unframed, signed at lower right by California painter JOSIE (JO ANITA) STARKEY (1895-1962). This is a colorful work by a noted California woman artist known for her genre paintings. She is listed in many reference works including Dawdy, Hughes, and Falk's Who Was Who in American Art, and the Dictionary of Women Artists. Pastel on thin paper board seascape of waves and distant shipping on a gray, overcast day, 10" by 18" (15" by 23" as framed) signed at lower left "Mangold". Gouache on black paper, 11" by 17" (17 1/2" by 23 1/2" as framed), the subject a child-like angel in a nighttime winter landscape of fantasy, carrying a star staff, a doe like Bambi walking beside her. This was not easy to describe; best to just view the images! It is signed at lower right by artist HILDA GENTRY.
