A beautifully executed miniature folk art watercolor on thin card portrait by J. H. Gillespie, housed in a cast foliate metal locket with an aperture on the reverse.
The condition is excellent, with no issues whatsoever. The reverse of the case is lacking the surround and glazing to the aperture.
Note: Gillespie was active on the East Coast of North America, Baltimore, New York, and Philadelphia around the 1829-1838 time period...
19th century, miniature French self-portrait painting of Elizabeth Vigee-Lebrun with her daughter. Lebrun caused a public scandal when her “Self-Portrait with Her Daughter Julie” was exhibited at the Salon of 1787 showing her smiling and open-mouthed (“bearing her teeth”), which was in direct contravention of traditional painting conventions going back to antiquity. Painted in wonderful realist style the colors are still vibrant having been protected from the elements all these years...
Antique American oil painting on canvas by listed, well-known American Illinois artist Lillian Bertha Hulsmann (1885 – 1966).
The painting depicts a scenic summer countryside landscape with a farm and house in the foreground and country houses in the background.

The artist signs it in the lower right corner "L...
A pair of oil on card paintings, each signed lower left, by C. Ph. Weber. The first is of a church and churchyard behind a rock wall. The second depicts fishing along the Delaware river. Typical of the artist's work is the fine use of light and color, rendering an almost impressionistic feel.
Condition of the paintings is very good, with no damage or restoration...
Considering all the feathers and foliage, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a bird actually living in the mass of ostrich feathers, flowers, and upswept hair of the blue-eyed sitter. This late 18th century miniature is in excellent condition and is presented in a 1 5/8" by 1 3/8" gold bracelet clasp.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Francisca Efigenia Meléndez y Durazzo, sometimes given as Francisca Meléndez de Múquiz (1770–1825) was a Spanish miniaturist and pastellist...
By the internationally acclaimed (male) artist Shirl Goedike (born 1923) is this impressive fine watercolor painting of a sun-washed large classic estate mansion, likely in southern France, (conceivably, in Southern California), signed at lower left by the artist and dated 1991. The piece measures 20 1/2" by 28 1/2" inside the mat and 28 1/4" by 35 1/2" as framed. I have not opened the backing to determine a title or firmly establish the geography of the subject...
A striking miniature with a good attribution to George Newcombe. As opposed to the more usual bust length rendering, this is a 3/4 length pose. That, combined with the style of the dress, intentionally gives a longer, or imposing, feel to the figure.
When the organic substrate of the painting was trimmed, it was done unevenly and close to an edge, so it could be framed better than in the current half of a travel case. Sight size is 3 1/8" by 2 1/2".
By the hand of listed American artist HUGO MELVILLE FISHER (1876-1946), an impressive oil on canvas painting of the vegetated banks of a river on a spring day, 23" by 27" (31" by 35" attractively framed), signed at lower right corner in red. The impressionist, rich, IMPASTO technique (as in the tree's leaves) is impressive and skilled. Fisher, the son of artist Hugo Anton Fisher, was born in Brooklyn in 1876, moving to Alameda, California at age 8. He spent two years in Hawaii...
A quaint work of a harbor scene in oil measuring 20x24”
A striking mid-century painting from Mexico, glowing with color, by the hand of listed artist JORGE EDGARDO RAMIREZ (sometimes followed by MARTINEZ), born 1940. The oil on canvas, 16 1/4" by 31 1/2" in thin strip framing, is signed at lower right and is signed again, titled and dated on the reverse. The orange, brown and tan earth colors cement its mid-century heritage. The work glows from within, possessing an almost fluorescent quality...
A fine watercolor on card portrait done by Paul Gomien. The sitter is a woman wearing a puffy sleeved gray-blue dress with a lace collar. Her accessories include a black belt and a gold necklace.
In addition to being signed "Gomien" and dated "1822" along the center right edge the reverse has a trade card reading "P. Gomien/Peintre, Rue St. Honore No 247 pres le Palais Royal". For the period and location this is quite rare...
A miniature portrait of a handsome gentleman in a blue jacket with gold buttons. Presented in the original cast foliate case, the reverse having chessboard hairwork centered with "RD" initials in underlying gold topped with pearls.
Excellent condition with any apparent issues being due to my infamous photographic skills. The case size is 2 1/2" by 2".
A large (19" by 23") watercolor painting of striking desert formations of the Southwest, with distinct modernist overtones, signed at lower right by listed artist MYRTLE MAE HOFFMAN CAMPBELL (1886-1978). The work depicts a dramatic landscape, perhaps in Utah, or Arizona, the geologic formations seemingly mimicking organic forms and Moderne and Art Deco shapes. The signs of man are scant; some shacks and a stack at upper left...

Impressionist oil on canvas painting of ships in a harbor, titled on stretcher "San Francisco Bay in 1840", signed at lower right "M. McDOWD" (MARGARET EPENETER McDOWD 1894-1990). The work, 24" by 30", unframed, is masterfully painted. with excellent handling of light and color, all somewhat intentionally hazy and muted. The steam engine at left seems to cast some doubt on the "1840" date portrayed; a later date, even to about 1920, would be accurate, given the type of ships and the appearance...

(ONE OF FOUR BY MERRIAM IN MY SHOP) Large oil on canvas, 30" by 40" (38" by 48" framed), in its vintage original frame, the subject California's world famous Yosemite Valley, signed at lower left by the talented California painter JAMES MERRIAM (1880-1951). This work is very typical of the artist, both in its impressive size and in the characteristic impressionistic style of the artist. Merriam was born in Canada and was studying in Detroit, before arriving in Southern California. He traveled th...

A well executed miniature of an English gent. The reverse of the painting identifies the sitter as Thomas Sheppard, painted by W. Bate in 1802. Presented in an unusual gold painted frame with the miniature displayed in the diagonal direction. The condition of the miniature is excellent, with the inside rim of the frame having a "ding" at around 2:00 o'clock. Sight size is 2 7/8" by 2 3/8" with an overall size of 4 1/2" by 4 1/2".
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: There is not much known about William B...
This is a work with a real WPA 1930's feeling to it, but it is dated 1965. The artist was IDA HANSGEN, or possibly, HANSGREN. (There's a little writing on the frame on reverse that suggests there might have been an "r" in her name). Very surprisingly, I cannot find a listing or any information on her. The painting's subject is a courthouse with "1877" over the door, the building artistically placed in a contrived and constricted space, a classic butte type mountain filling the upper left cor...

Watercolor on paper painting of a lone figure in a clearing surrounded by summer trees, unframed, 9 1/4" by 14", signed at lower left "S.J YARD. 97. JUNE." This is an eastern-looking work though the subject is almost certainly somewhere in Northern California. Yard was born in Rockford, Illinois where he was able to become introduced to art. Still young, after further art study in New York, he moved to London, coming under the tutelage of Royal Academician Sutton Palmer. In London, the young...
Nicely painted on organic wafer, this miniature portrait is of a handsome gentleman set against a bluish-gray background. Housed in a low karat gilded cast foliate pendant case with an empty glazed aperture verso. The miniature is in a specially made leather case that opens and props open to allow the miniature to be displayed or removed.
The condition of the miniature and case are excellent, with no issues to speak of. The white areas along the top edge and at the lower left are due to re...

It is signed at lower left "L. van Straten", which is a well-known pseudonym for the listed Dutch artist HERMANUS KOEKKOEK II (1836-1909), along with "J. van Couver". The painting captures the charismatic personality of the legendary leader, exuding an aura of his authority and power.
The painting exhibits the artist's exceptional...

**One of two works by the artist in my shop** Oil on canvas, titled on original label "Cold Drink Stand", measuring 12" by 16" on the stretchers, 20" by 23 1/4" as framed, signed at lower left by the well listed modernist California painter DAN LUTZ (1906-1978). The label affixed to the stretcher, on which is written "Cold Drink Stand/By/Dan Lutz" is the original red and blue-bordered Dalzell Hatfield Galleries label, although it is now partially missing (compare to the intact one on the other...
Oil on canvas painting of a man seated in a library, 28" by 22" (34" by 27 3/4" framed), signed on the book cover at lower right and the subject apparently one "Dr. Young", by well listed Russian-born California artist ALEXANDER IGNATIEV (1913-1995). The work is very 1940's/1950's in feeling, almost mural-like. Ignatiev escaped Russia for China during the revolution and was in San Francisco by 1923, where he studied with Gleb Ilyin. Later in Los Angeles he studied at Chouinard with Millard Sh...

Oil on canvas scene of a Parisian street with figures, in the early 20th century, 24" by 20" (30" by 25 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by the popular contemporary painter who signs as "G. SHERMAN". The scene is reminiscent of Caillebotte's famous scenes of Paris, or perhaps of a number of works by the noted British painter L. P. Lowry. Paintings signed by this artist G. Sherman were formerly listed in auction catalogs by some of the biggest houses in America as being by the listed artist G...
A good-sized example of the scarce work of Nagasaki, Japan-born artist JUNJI YAMASHITA (1940-), featuring Sacre Coeur church in Montmartre. The work is painted in a monochromatic palette of grayish brown, and a palette knife is used to spread around the paint. Note the skilled use of the palette knife in the lower right portion. Yamashita is known for his landscapes and still lifes, the most recent painted in a Post-Impressionist style. This is an early work, (it is signed at lower left "Jui...
