Haku Maki was a Japanese print master of the late 20th century. His prints at the time this one was published were strong on the use of kanji and abstract designs, as shown here. In this case; the design is abstract, it shows archaic images which we are trying to understand. The print is large, well designed and carried off.
The seller Ashley Brasca of Winnipeg Canada wrote to me about this print:
“It is special because of the texture and physical quality achieved on the surface...
An extremely fine depiction of an older woman, attributed to Charles Jagger, done in watercolor on natural wafer. Jagger was known to draw with a high degree of accuracy and talent, especially in the faces of his subjects, and that is certainly the case here. Also note the way the lace edges and the satin dress are highlighted...
An old "cabin art" oil on soft paper board primitive style painting of Northern California's famed Mt. Shasta, towering over a rugged landscape including waterfall, tall trees, steep gorge, and a charming log house at left with smoke coming from the chimney. The painting measures 24 1/2" by 19 1/2", unframed. The board is warped, the surface uneven, and there is a snaking 8" crack in the board at right and small puncture at lower center. The work is delicate and requires very careful handling...
A superbly painted miniature portrait by the important American miniaturist Anson Dickinson, originally in a heavy wooden frame that was damaged, but now housed under glass in one half of a dag case. The reverse of the original frame has quite a bit of information on it, indicating that the sitter is Ambrose Dickinson, one of Anson's nine siblings...
Biography
I was born in Athens, Greece and raised in Canada, and the influences of the old and new world have always been present. These influences have inspired me to create images that blur the line between photography and painting, modern and classical, reality and illusion.
I attended the school of art and design at Sheridan College as well as the Ontario College of Art. In my third year, I studied fine art in Florence, Italy...
A very finished, beautifully executed pastel of a middle-aged lady, she nicely coiffed and elegant in appearance, the work signed at lower right "CARLES". I have researched the work, (including contacting an acknowledged expert on well-known Pennsylvania artist Arthur Carles Jr. 1882-1952) and she does not feel it has the characteristics to enable it to be called the work of that noted American painter. It is offered as a nicely executed portrait drawing...
Ink on paper laid on board, 6 1/4" by 4 1/4" (the drawing itself), signed at lower right J.C.F.M. and signed again on reverse of the card "J.C.F. Murray '08" and titled "Volendam". I don't see a listing for this name, if I'm reading it correctly, but the drawing is obviously by a trained hand. Note the details of the wooden shoes on both figures, the traditional bonnet on the lady. Volendam is a small town north of Amsterdam and is known for its traditional dress and traditions...
A modernistic oil thin canvas, laid on plywood, signed at lower left in Hebrew script. The subject is a still life including cup and saucer, what appears to be a pitcher, and other table top items arranged in an intentionally shallow space. The work measures 18 1/2" by 22" and is unframed. The wood panel has warped with time, causing the work to be concave. A restorer could likely remove from the wood and place it on another canvas but of course that would come at a cost...
An old oil on canvas laid on board painting of the northern San Francisco waterfront around Fort Mason, along with a panoramic view to Angel Island and Marin County beyond, unframed, 11" by 14", signed at lower right "Whited". There is only one listed artist with the last name, an (Elva) Viola Whited of Texas, which internet search reveals likely birth/death dates of 1902-1983. This could be our artist or could be someone totally unrelated...
Colorful drawing of fruit and a vase of flowers on a table, 20" by 24" framed, signed at lower right "Laurel Scherer". The drawing is beautifully executed by a sure hand, in what appears to be oil crayon or similar medium. I don't see a listing for an artist by this name so will offer this on its decorative merits. Condition is excellent. This colorful, vigorous drawing will look great in a dining area or large kitchen.
Jacques James Joseph Tissot
1836-1902
French
This is one of the finest mezzotints by the important French artist James Jacques Tissot. The title is: Le Banc de jardin (The Garden Bench) It was created and printed in 1883. This was a rare first state impression prior to the lettering added at the bottom edge...
One of two works in my shop by apparently the same artist, (acquired at different times---the other JB01670): a watercolor on paper, 10 3/4" by 7 1/2" (17" by 14" in its simple green frame), signed illegibly (faint, at lower right), the subject a Spanish (most likely) church tower, the foreground dominated by impressive arches and columns. I have included three photos of the faint signature and leave it to the viewer to try to decipher it. My best guess is that this would be one of the famous b...
Oil on board painting featuring flaming autumnal trees, a view to high mountains beyond, signed at lower right "STIRLING". This 12" by 8 1/2" work (18" by 15" framed) is a rather typical example of Colorado impressionist artist DAVE STIRLING (1887-1971). Stirling was a familiar face in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, where he had a studio from which he sold paintings to passing tourists. The studio and home was called the Bugscuffle Ranch, and it was located just inside the park....

Gouache and pencil on paper, 16 3/4" by 12 1/2" (slightly larger as simply framed), signed at lower left by listed American artist JOHN EDWIN JACKSON (1876-1950). The scene is a genteel one, with a proper southern gentleman and belle, in a grand architectural setting. The artist was very prolific, illustrating many books and magazines in the first half of the twentieth century, yet, little seems to be known about him. A few pieces have been sold at illustration art auctions. This work is in ...
