Circa 1900 American pastel landscape drawing, 22 1/2" by 9 3/4" (29" by 15" framed), apparently unsigned, in the style of William Chandler and the pastel school of the period. The work is framed behind non-glare glass, which blurs the detail. Condition appears to be excellent. The vertical format would fit your hard-to-fit narrow wall. See other American pastels of the late 19th century/early 20th century period in my shop.

From our European Collection, a beautiful mid-late 19th Century pastel under glass rendering of a young woman with a pensive gaze, flower in her hair, and time piece in hand, framed in a wonderful gilt-carved and gesso Period frame of the era, with very ornate ribboning at the top. A rare, historical, early pastel on heavy paper laid to card drawing of a young Zuni indian girl in Arizona, unsigned, circa late 19th century, including the original gold mat, decorated with images of tipis and spears. The work measures 18" by 12" (entire mat) and 12 3/4" by 6 1/4" inside the mat. Sadly, the old antique work has been damaged. There is a darkened diagonal stain that extends from upper right down across the front of the face and into the hair...

Large (22" by 36", unframed) pastel drawing on heavy paper, which has been in turn laid on canvas, signed at lower left center by the well-listed American landscape artist GEORGE DOUGLAS BREWERTON (1827-1901). The impressive drawing features a Hudson River School-like landscape with no figures, the hazy ball of the sun dominating the sky. The overall effect is one of Luminism. In the style of mid nineteenth century American folk art is this charming work (27 1/2" by 20 1/2"---33 1/2" by 26 1/2" framed) depicting a young lady with sun bonnet and scythe and wheat in hand, as if she has just come in from the fields. The pastel mastery is obvious; the artist, anonymous. The work is framed and behind heavy non-glare glass which tends to blur detail and is not generally safe to ship, as it is highly likely to shatter in transit...

Pastel on paper drawing of a rocky coastline with sailing craft offshore, apparently unsigned, 9 1/4" by 23", (16 3/4" by 31" as framed), circa 1900. The style of the drawing is reminiscent of that of American artists like Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908). The popular and common pastel art of William Chandler also comes to mind. The work needs a new mat and the old acidic wood backing is best replaced. Otherwise for its age this work is in excellent condition.

In the style of noted and popular late 19th century/early 20th century pastel artist WILLIAM CHANDLER, this is a nicely executed work featuring purple grapes, a sectioned orange, a peach in the back, and some seeds and grape leaves. Measuring 10 3/4" by 14" (15 1/2" by 18 1/2" as framed), signed "MAYER" at lower right, I have been unable to match this up with a listed artist, but the work, dating to as late as 1930 or so, is very decorative and folky and in excellent condition, as is the frame.

Everett Shinn (November 6, 1876 – May 1, 1953) was an American painter and member of the urban realist Ashcan School. Shinn started as a newspaper illustrator in Philadelphia, demonstrating a rare facility for depicting animated movement, a skill that would, however, soon be eclipsed by photography. Here he worked with William J. Glackens, George Luks and John Sloan, who became core-members of the Ashcan School, led by Robert Henri, which defied official good taste in favour of robust images o...

American circa 1910 or at least early twentieth century pastel on paper drawing of grapes, apples and a banana, 17" by 20 3/4" framed in an oval, unsigned. The work is typical of pastel still life of the period, though I do not believe it by the "Chandler" workshop. Modest homes of the period were lucky to have an original work of art rather than a print. This one has survived in very good condition. The artist was clearly very skilled but unfortunately failed to sign the work. An elegant interior is suggested by the orange pottery vessel at far right. Large size (39" by 27 1/2" framed) pastel of hollyhocks in bloom, apparently unsigned, drawn on canvas. The work probably dates to the first third of the 20th century, when the flower was more popular and more commonly planted around houses. Except for a small bit of contact with the glass, the drawing is in fine condition.

A pleasant pastel on paper drawing of pink roses, signed at lower right by artist Lora King and dated there '39. On the reverse backing paper the name "Lora King Arnold" is written, and again "Lora Arnold" and original $100.00 price appears. There seems to be minimal information available on the artist (online I did see a 1923-1960 lifespan that may or may not be accurate). The work measures 11 1/4" by 15" (17 1/2" by 21 1/2" in original framing). The drawing is in excellent condition overal...

A vintage pastel drawing of wood and thatch traditional homes on stilts in a shallow estuary at sunset, 11 3/4" by 17 3/4" (18 1/2" by 24" framed), signed at lower left "Lohmann" and dated there 1939. On the reverse is an old framer's label from Manila, the Philippines, and written in handwriting on the backing is "Zamboanga, P.I.". I believe Zamboanga is in Mindanao Island in the southern part of the country. This old work, pre-dating the war years, is by an accomplished artist, but I am not ...

A charming pastel signed M. Gibert Paris. Framed, there is a title that is obscured by the mat on the left side. The gilt frame is chipped, the picture is fine. The frame measures 18" x 15-7/8".

Old circa 1940's chalk portrait drawing of a young woman with red hair and striking light eyes, 22" by 16" (27" by 20 1/2" framed in green metal strip frame), apparently unsigned. This is one of several drawings I encountered by (I believe) the same artist. Two other drawings were signed, but illegibly, so the identity of the artist is a mystery. I think the paper might have been rolled at one time as under certain raking light conditions one can see soft horizontal, roughly parallel creases....

A nicely worked pastel drawing of cypress trees in a swamp landscape, Spanish Moss hanging down gracefully, the work signed at lower right "Sr. M. Lucy", 8" by 6" as framed, circa 1950. This is a difficult subject to draw well but the artist accomplished the chore with skill. Condition is excellent. I do not see an obvious listed artist with whom to link this. Framing is simple, work will need to be re-matted/sealed as it is currently loose under the glass.

An interesting pastel drawing on paper, circa 1940's, the subject a clear green glass vase of violet and blue flowers set on a round table top adjacent to a high-floor window in a big city, lacy curtains framing the scene at both sides. The envelope sitting on the table appears to have a signature on it, in the trompe l'oeil tradition of the artist signing his/her name on an envelope; but that signature despite my best efforts defies reading. The work measures 18 1/2" by 12 1/2" inside the pre...

Finely executed pastel on paper drawing of bridges spanning a major river, presumably the Rhein in Germany, 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" (15 1/2" by 19 1/2" as framed), signed at lower left by listed German artist RUDOLF MULLER-GERHARDT (1873-1962) (and sometimes spelled as GERHARD). Though listed the artist is apparently not well known. The beautiful impressionist technique speaks for the talent of the artist; were this same work signed by Lesser Ury, a German artist well known for his pastels, it wou...

Pastel on paper laid on board drawing of trees and fields, a shed providing a human element, 7" by 9" (11" by 12 3/4" framed), signed at lower right "R. Nourse". This is a very fine little drawing with a touch of post-impressionist Van Gogh and other artists especially in the branches and trunks of the tall trees. The only listed artist with the name Nourse is Elizabeth Nourse. I see there is a Rebecca Nourse but the time period does not correspond to the drawing which likely dates to the mid...
