Executed on heavy watercolor paper, this is a beautiful work by a trained hand, 18" by 26 1/2", unframed, and unsigned. At lower left is written "Valley Ten P/1912", and to the right of and below that "After a fire". On the reverse in pencil is "Valley of Ten Peaks" and "MORAINE LAKE". The painting has foxing in the sky and the reverse is also foxed, but the colors are not faded...

Watercolor on paper extensive landscape with sheep lounging peacefully around a mature tree in full spring bloom, 13" by 26" (23" by 35" as framed), signed at lower right by noted American artist CARL PHILLIP WEBER (1850-1921). The subject matter is rather typical of the artist's work. Weber was from the Philadelphia area and often painted rural, bucolic local landscapes in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Sheep are often found in his compositions and this painting certainly includes them...

Indian painting of the goddess Shailaputri, in unique Navaratna style of painting from 1930s, when Indian was emerging with its own unique style of painting. Gouache delicately painted and encoded with symbols of Hindu spiritual meaning. Crescent moon is on her forehead with halo around her head. She is holding a trident and has three eyes in her forehead representing waking, dreaming and sleeping states of mind. Atmospheric and masterfully moody painting...

Watercolor and gouache painting on paper, 20 3/4" by 32 1/2" inside the mat (37" by 50" as framed), signed at lower right by noted well listed American 19th century artist Edmund Darch Lewis. Lewis was a prolific artist. He worked in both oil and watercolor. Auction records have exceeded $90,000 for his finest oils. I once saw one oil of a tropical landscape in Cuba, in the Hudson River tradition, priced at $25,000, and that was too low...

A watercolor landscape of a barn and other outbuildings in a landscape, signed at lower right in pencil by well listed, Pennsylvania artist and illustrator RANULPH BYE (1916-2003). The watercolor measures 10 1/4" by 13 1/4" inside the present mat (16" by 19" in the present sky-blue metal frame). Bye was born in Princeton, New Jersey and received art training in Philadelphia and New York...

A small but impressive watercolor painting of silhouetted eucalyptus trees at sunset or dawn, 3" by 2 1/4" (11" by 10 1/2" framed), signed at lower left by the noted California artist ALBERT THOMAS DeROME (1885-1959). The work is tastefully framed with mat and is wall-ready. DeRome was born on California's Central Coast. He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco with Arthur Mathews, and Lorenzo Latimer, and took on commercial work (advertising and political cartoons)...

Watercolor on paper, unsigned, 14" by 18" (19" by 23 1/2" as framed/matted), American, dating likely from the late thirties to the mid fifties. The work is obviously by a talented artist, considering the way in which the flowering trellis vine has been depicted. There is a Somerville, New Jersey label on reverse from the framing outfit, from 1959, naming an Earl Potter from Potterville, NJ, but I don't believe this is the artist's name...

Watercolor, 9 7/8" by 14" inside the mat (16 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right "N. White". This is a work showing, no doubt, the clipper ship Joseph Conrad, berthed at the Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. The clipper was built in Denmark in 1882 and was renamed as the Joseph Conrad. It was built strictly as a training ship. The artist, NELSON COOK WHITE (1900-1989) painted a lot of marine subject matter, and a number of these works have appeared at auction in New England...

For the aficionado of equine art, this is a beautifully composed watercolor and ink drawing of polo horses and players, signed at lower right by listed Arizona woman artist ALICE LORD MARSHALL (1895-1993). The work measures 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" inside the mat and 18 1/2" by 23" as framed. I recently acquired this from her grandson, formerly of the Phoenix area, now living in Pacific Palisades, California...

Watercolor and pencil on paper drawing of a red roofed village church surrounded by small houses and trees, 12 1/4" by 17 7/8" (20 3/4" by 25 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right "V.J. Roux-Champion 1944). The drawing is a work of noted French artist VICTOR JOSEPH ROUX-CHAMPION (1871-1953). Condition is excellent with fresh colors and no water damage or foxing. The artist's works are offered at auction in England and the Continent.

Unusual watercolor of what appears to be a wagon on the plains, piled high with rocks perhaps, and, even, the skull of a buffalo, signed at lower right "P. PARSONS '96". The watercolor is on paper and measures 8 1/2" by 18 3/4" (15 1/4" by 25 1/4" as framed). The work is in excellent condition with no foxing visible. I do not see an obvious listing for the artist. Found in San Diego area. Recently, on the east coast, I saw a watercolor coastal scene signed in the same manner.

Watercolor and gouache on paper of a backwater creek or lake surrounded by feathery trees, 12 1/2" by 19 1/2" plus 3 1/2" of mat and frame, unsigned, most likely American. The work is in very good shape save for some age browning of the paper most visible by comparing to the top inch or so which evidently at one time was hidden under a mat. The artist was obviously skilled in watercolor. A very peaceful scene for your wall.

Watercolor on painting of Pirates Alley in the famous French Quarter of New Orleans, 14 1/4" by 5 1/4", 23" by 9 1/2" framed behind non-glare glass, signed at lower left by the well-known New Orleans artist ROBERT M. RUCKER (1932-2001). Rucker is recognized for his contributions to art of New Orleans, the lower Mississippi River valley, Louisiana, and the Old South. Works are included in the Louisiana State Museum and the Historic New Orleans Collection, and hundreds of private collections aro...

Watercolor on paper painting of an old wooden church of northern New Mexico, signed at lower right by artist ROSS PAXTON (1931-2003). The painting is very impressionistic. Paxton was born in rural northeast Oregon and went to college in Albuquerque, and later lived in New Jersey, furthering his art career in New York City. After serving in the Army, in the Korean War, Paxton remained in New York for much of his life, an illustrator for AC&R ad agency, and handled major accounts. Measurements ...

Watercolor on paper drawing, unframed, 15" by 21 1/2" inside the gold mat, the subject two proper late Victorian women with parasols, on a small boat in a lake landscape, towering trees in the background, signed at lower left with what appears as "D. G. Streeton", and dated there 1898. This is a nicely executed work, probably American. I cannot seem to match it to a known artist. It is not the work of Australian Arthur Ernest Streeton. I also thought the signature could be "Streeter", but I...

Watercolor on heavy paper laid on board, 30" by 22", unframed, signed at upper left corner in ball point pen "Ernest W. Scanes, 3/25/66, Otsego Remnant". Scanes (1909-1994) is best known as a Michigan artist, certainly a Midwest artist, but also, due to his illustration of books and ads, he is known as an illustrator as well. I have previously owned a 1947 gouache, also of skiers, and am currently offering a charcoal drawing by him in my shop. Evidently, a relative of the artist resides or re...

Watercolor on paper, 13 1/2" by 9 1/2" (and simple frame 1 3/8" wide), unsigned, the subject a hushed redwood forest obviously in Northern California, the sunlight dappling the forest floor, and a slight hint of man's intrusion in the form of a split wood fence or gate. The colors, handling, and subject matter suggest the hand of important early California watercolorist LORENZO P. LATIMER (1857-1941), but Latimer had many students who painted in his style, (including his son), so we cannot be a...
