Federico Jiménez Fernandez was born in Madrid in 1841 and trained at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving of San Fernando where he studied with José Gonzalez Bande. He traveled to Paris to continue his studies, as did so many other artists of the time...

Francois van Severdonck, Belgian, 1809-1889, "Sheep and Lamb in a Spring Landscape", Oil on panel, painting measures 7 x 9 3/8 inches in a 12 x 15 1/2 inch gold period frame. Signed and dated "F. Van Severdonck f. 1863" in the lower left, inscribed and signed by the artist on the reverse. A luminous painting with striking color and detail.

Original oil painting on canvas by Catalan painter Modesto Texidor (aka Modest Teixidor; Spain, Barcelona, 1854-1928). Circa 1895-1897. Signed "M. Texidor" upper right. 31" by 20" painting alone, 38" by 27" in its probably original frame. Modesto Texidor studied with Bastien-Lepage and Carolus Duran in Paris. He exhibited regularly in the Salons de la Societe des Beaux Arts (from 1895 to 1899). A wood engraving published in the late 1900s was created to reproduce this painting...

China Trade painting - "Coastal Village Scene With Anchored Junk". Oil on canvas. Circa: late 19th C. Size: 17 3/4 inches x 23 1/2 inches. Unsigned. A painting from the China Trade school depicting modest homes along a coastal estuary, together with the local inhabitants and a 'junk' at anchor. Offered in a black and gold wood frame and retaining a Quester Gallery label, Stonington, CT. Professionally restored and relined on a new stretcher.

An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicts the most central event in Christianity, the Nativity of our Lord Christ.

The icon is finely hand-painted in bright colors and gold on gesso on a wood panel. It depicts Baby Jesus laying in the cradle in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes, with a Bethlehem star shining from above, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St Joseph.

The upper left part is painted with three kings on horseback traveling in search of Jesus...

Portrait of a woman by French artist Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905). Board: 9.25"L x 12.9"H framed 18.5" L x 14.75" w. Henner entered the École des Beaux-Arts and won the Prix de Rome in 1858. He exhibited paintings in the Salon, many now in the Musée d'Orsay. In 1889, he became commander of the Legion of Honour and succeeded Cabanel in the Institut de France. In 1900, he won a Grand Prix for painting at the Paris Exposition Universelle. Excellent condition minor age wear.

From our European Collection, a lovely and substantially-sized 19th century nautical oil painting of ships in a European port, signed and dated S. Brade 1871. This painting is in excellent condition with only the typical fine craquelure expected in paintings of its age. UV light inspection suggests possible small random areas of touch-up to the sky, but otherwise this piece has survived well in fine original, essentially unrestored condition...

Circa late 19th century oil on canvas, 14 1/4" by 24" (18" by 27 1/2" framed), unsigned, though I think quite possibly by a listed artist, the subject one of the picturesque lakes surrounded by mountains in southern Germany or Tyrol in Austria, a lakeside chalet at right surrounded by trees and a pair of figures in a small boat just pulling up to the shore after their excursion...

"The Sleigh Ride" Oil on board, 26" x 21" framed, 19.5" x 14.75" unframed, circa 1855 Jan Walraven is a Dutch artist popular for his depiction of children and as seen in this wonderful piece, sleigh rides. Jan Walraven's art typlifies the Dutch style, which he executes masterfully. He is a well listed artist and this would make a wonderful addition to the finest art collection.

This is a very fine painting of a man and his dog fishing. Oil on canvas, 18 x 26 inches, c. 1880, signed in the lower left corner,by Francois Vuagnat. Francois Vuagnat was born in Geneva in 1826. and died in 1910. He was a well known Artist and Photographer. Housed in a 19th century frame with gold liner. A fine scene with the man's trusty companion awaiting dinner.

A very poetic landscape, oil on board, 18" by 13" (24 1/2" by 19 1/2" in gold frame), the scene an idyllic mountain setting, a large and important-looking house at left, a water wheel at right powering a mill, a tiny female figure and goats at left relaxing on a lawn. The light is luminous, handled well by an obviously talented hand. The artist, who signed at lower left in green, is FERDINAND SOMMER (1822-1901)...

From our European Collection, a very fine historical oil painting on canvas by Robert Alexander Hillingford (1828-1904) entitled "Charles X of Sweden after the Battle of Pultova." Signed lower right "R. Hillingford"...

This very unusual portrait of a lady appears to be dressed in the finest apparal of its day. Notice the pearls and feather hat. It is mounted in the original stretcher and appears to be a replacement frame. There is writing on the reverse of the canvas and more info to be added later.

In the style of mid nineteenth century American folk art is this charming work (27 1/2" by 20 1/2"---33 1/2" by 26 1/2" framed) depicting a young lady with sun bonnet and scythe and wheat in hand, as if she has just come in from the fields. The pastel mastery is obvious; the artist, anonymous. The work is framed and behind heavy non-glare glass which tends to blur detail and is not generally safe to ship, as it is highly likely to shatter in transit.
