Oil on canvas painting of a delightful tropical landscape with verdant vegetation and towering royal palms, 24" by 36" (28 1/2" by 40 1/2" as nicely framed), signed at lower right by artist J. GARCIA and dated there 2001. The colors and composition are strongly in the style of the important artist from Cuba, Domingo Ramos, who created such landscapes in the 1920's and 1930's. I am unable to locate any information on this artist despite an intensive search...

A vintage still life oil painting, unframed, 30" by 24", signed twice at lower right (one, very faint) by listed Southern California artist BERTHA TOWNSEND COLER (1865-1948). Coler was born in Ohio and studied with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase in New York City. By 1928 she had moved to Santa Monica, California and for the next two decades was a prolific painter in watercolor and oil, concentrating on portraits and still life, with some landscapes in the mix...

An interesting, folky, oil on canvas painting of a house with stone chimney set in a lush open valley, apparently set in Salinas Valley in California, signed by artist Sharon Moree Giambrocco Ebina, who wrote a long story on the back of the canvas. In that story she explains how the painting is inspired by the movie made from the John Steinbeck book "East of Eden". She also touches on the Japanese inspiration she feels, her signature incorporating the Japanese character for "valley"...

An interesting Mid-Century abstract on paper, 12" by 16" inside the mat, 18 3/4" by 23" framed, unsigned. The work could well date to the 1960's, the paper thin and slightly browned. I am not clear on the type of paint used; it is not simple watercolor. Could be a mix of some sort; the gold is metallic and the darkest portions have a gloss when viewed at an angle. Final photo is from the reverse side through the paper seepage...

Found in far northern Vermont in the course of an art buying trip some years ago, is this unframed 20" by 16" oil on canvas portrait of a man, apparently signed "Shoelman" at lower right and signed again and dated on the reverse (possibly, 1806, though, more likely, 1846, considering the style---the digit likely a "4"). I acquired the painting near Cambridge/Jeffersonville not far from the Canadian border...

Oil on canvas painting of pink roses in a vase, circa 1890's, signed at lower left in red by listed American artist OSCAR MILLER (1867-1921). The 17" by 14" (27" by 24" framed) painting is beautifully executed by a talented hand. Oscar Miller was born in Manhattan and died in Providence, Rhode Island in 1921. He is known for a variety of subject matter including portraits, marine scenes, genre and still life. This painting has an 8" horizontal tear in the upper portion...

The Pensive Shepherdess

(British School, 19th Century)

Oil on canvas, Unsigned

Painting size: 30” x 20”
Frame size: 36.25” x 26.5”

This sweet genre painting of a shepherdess with her flock reflects the theme of the child-of-nature, a sensibility embraced by Victorians during the 19th century. The figure’s youth and comely face convey innocence, while her steadfast pose next to the goldenrod suggests that she is at ease in her environment.

Young Girl with Paper Dolls

Oil-on-canvas, Unsigned

Oval: 19” x 14 ¼”
Frame: 25 ½” x 20 ¾”

This charming study of a young girl intent on cutting out paper dolls is reminiscent of works by Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Pierre-Auguste Renoir (his earlier works). She is beautifully captured with her rosebud lips, her hair tied up in a bow, a lacy pinafore over her navy dress and stockinged legs ...

A rare original drawing, dated January 1849, titled in margin at lower center "Jackall Hunting in India", by listed England-born Australian 19th century artist HENRY GILBERT-JONES (1804-1888). The watercolor measures 13 1/2" by 19 1/2" (18 1/4" by 26" in lemon-gold frame). This appears at first like a classic traditional sporting art print of fox hunting, but closer examination reveals it is in fact a highly detailed early watercolor and ink drawing...

An old (circa 1900, perhaps earlier) oil on canvas laid on a Masonite panel, 19 1/2" by 15 1/2" (24 1/2" by 20 1/2" framed), signed at center left with conjoined initials "AF" (or, possibly, AT). The work features an older man wearing gold-rimmed spectacles, his white moustache and beard adding considerable character to this individual, who looks like a professor or other man of wisdom, accomplishment, and achievement. To date, an effort to tie the work to a listed artist has been unsuccessful...

A pleasant impressionist watercolor painting of a marsh or slough, possibly Cape Ann, Massachusetts area, signed at lower right by Oregon-associated artist ALFRED HERMANN SCHROFF (1863-1939). The watercolor is on paper which was long ago laid to a board. The work measures 10 1/4" by 15 1/2" inside the mat and 14 1/4" by 19 1/2" as framed. Schroff was born in Springfield, MA during the Civil War years...

For your Mid Century interior, a really well-crafted oil on canvas painting, 22" by 28" (30" by 36" in wood frame, possibly the original), signed at lower center "Robert Anderson" and dated nearby "52". On the reverse the artist wrote "Robert P. Anderson/158 Old Road/Sewaren, N.J.". Sewaren is an unincorporated area in Middlesex County, just off the New Jersey turnpike in an industrial area between New Brunswick and Elizabeth, and just west of Staten Island...

A 20th century painting of a luminous, dramatic coastal sunset, the final light of the day reflecting on the rolling, beautifully depicted waves and aqua water, an interesting tree at right on the promontory adding balance and interest. The painting, unframed, 24" by 36", is not signed on the front but on the reverse is "Casati". I have researched the name and see a listed artist Carlo Casati (1889-1965) who might be a fit, as there are paintings online of similar subject by obviously the same...

A beautifully painted gem of a small work, acrylic or oil on paper on board (tempera?), or directly on board, 11" by 14" (17" by 20 1/4" in silvery frame), signed at lower right ARTHUR A. HENDERSON 1989 (with copyright symbol). The work would be easy to mistake for a print; but it is not. GUARANTEED TO BE AN ORIGINAL PAINTING. The subject is a pond at midwinter dusk, probably in the northeast. Skaters take a last go at it as daylight fades. There are white snow geese and Canada Geese swimmi...

A contemporary oil on canvas painting of a handsome rooster, in the style of a traditional Chinese watercolor scroll painting, approximately 23" by 23" in black strip frame, with Chinese calligraphy at top left and right and one red artist seal. The work is by a competent hand. I am told by a Chinese reader that the family name of the artist is "Zhang" but cannot provide any more information other than the perhaps circa 1970's or 1980's New York framer's sticker. (And, oddly, this was found i...

Oil on canvas painting of a mill adjacent to a pond, 28" by 22", (33 1/2" by 27 1/4" framed) possibly signed at lower right, but affixed on reverse is an old handwritten slip of paper, with name of artist, subject identification ("Red House, Milltown"), her addresses, and 1924 Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 119th annual exhibition info, apparently item #95 in that exhibition. The artist is identified thereon as IRENA FRANKEBERGER. Surprisingly, given her talent with impressionist technique, ...
