Oil on canvas painting, 24" by 36" (30" by 42" framed), late 20th century, the subject a family of elephants at an African waterhole, signed at lower right by listed artist DON ERDMAN (sometimes spelled as ERDMANN). The work is similar to works by better known artists such as David Shepherd or Bob Kuhn which bring thousands of dollars. Erdman is listed in Davenport's, but I am hard pressed to find more information on him...

Note the attention to detail that extends to even the beaded bag and every blade of grass. Kober, who maintains a website, is a noted contemporary western American artist who appeared in the pages of Art of the West magazine as far back as 1989...

Vintage circa 1880's oil on canvas, 20" by 14" and 1" wide old dark oak simple frame, likely the original, signed at lower right side with the typical conjoined "MStraus" signature of well listed Northern California artist MEYER STRAUS (1831-1905). Straus was born in southern Germany, and was in the US by 1848. He traveled the southern states, including New Orleans and Mobile areas, as well as Ohio and Illinois...

A charming oil on canvas painting of central Paris by the Seine, a number of tiny figures enjoying their walks along the river with its barges. The artist signed at lower right "L Florguin" and dated the work 1953. Very surprisingly I see only scant information under this name. However the artist was obviously very familiar with the French naive school painters who flourished in the immediate post-war years...

Original acrylic on panel by Arnold Mesches, measuring 11" by 23". This early work by Mesches (dated on the reverse 1959) retains its original frame and was purchased from the artist in 1960. Arnold Mesches is an extremely well-listed artist born in New York in 1923. He is known for having turned the files the FBI kept on him into works of "engage" art. He is well represented in museums around the country, among which the San Francisco Museum of Art, and the San Diego Museum of Art...

A colorful and whimsical painting of tropical fruits in a basket, two birds adding to the charm, signed at lower right by early Haitian artist ANDRE SATURNE (1927-1983). The work is painted on board and measures 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" (19" by 23" framed in wood with gold leaf inner portion). Saturne was born in Petionville, a Port-au-Prince suburb. He attended the now-famous Centre d'Art in 1956 when the Haitian art movement as we know it today was just beginning to come together...

THREE unframed paintings on canvas, including a landscape viewed through a window (24" by 36"), a female figure on a balcony (36" by 24"), and a woman reclining on a bed (40" by 30"), one of the works signed at lower right by California-Japanese artist YURI MASON (1920-2000). As only one of the works is signed (and dated 1988), I would like to keep them together, as they were acquired together. There is little information on the artist, who painted in the San Francisco Bay area...

In this drawing the artist shows his skill with the pastel medium. This is a sensitive portrait of an attractive young lady against an interesting striped pattern background, a red rose before her. There is no indication as to who she might have been (no writing/labels on reverse)...

The work is a fine example by this talented woman artist, the cramped artistic space and carefully thought-out arrangement of the objects in that space indicative of an artist of great talent who is taking from Cezanne as well as the WPA (I would guess the age as circa 1930's or 1940's)...

Oil on canvas river scene with fishermen, 12" by 24" (was 18" by 30" as framed---however I have misplaced frame and consider the work currently unframed), signed at lower left in red "Boddington" (EDWIN H. BODDINGTON JR, 1836-1905). This is a typical subject of this nineteenth century British artist, who is listed in most dictionaries of English painters of the Victorian era...

A fine mid 19th century watercolor on organic wafer of a good looking young man. The sitter, with blue eyes and brown hair, is wearing a black coat and tie with a white shirt.

This painting is in its original A.P. Critchlow thermoplastic velvet lined case, an item which, in and of itself, is often sought after by collectors. Note that this case was produced even before a patent was granted.

Condition of the painting is excellent, with no issues whatsoever...

Original watercolor by Bertram Goodman (American, 1904-1988), circa 1940. Offered in a period frame. Signed l.r. 17" by 12" painting alone, 29" by 23" in frame. Bertram Goodman was a WPA artist and muralist. His works are held in the Brooklyn Museum and the Allbright-Knox Art Gallery.

A nicely painted waist length portrait, done on organic material, of an attractive woman with dark brown eyes and hair. The sitter, posed in front of a reddish-brown drape, is wearing a black gown with a lace collar cinched with a brooch matching her earrings. A gold chain with two pendants completes her outfit. Presented in a later gilt frame.

The painting is in excellent condition with no issues. The sight size is 2 1/2" by 2" and the framed size is 5 1/2" by 4 1/2".

A small but impressive watercolor painting of silhouetted eucalyptus trees at sunset or dawn, 3" by 2 1/4" (11" by 10 1/2" framed), signed at lower left by the noted California artist ALBERT THOMAS DeROME (1885-1959). The work is tastefully framed with mat and is wall-ready. DeRome was born on California's Central Coast. He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco with Arthur Mathews, and Lorenzo Latimer, and took on commercial work (advertising and political cartoons). In ...

An expertly painted WATERCOLOUR by G. L. Lewis, 1895, depicting the mountainous landscape around Lago Maggiore, ITALY, with many sailing boats and figures in the extensive lake landscape. Nicely framed in gold. Size of painting itself 23 cm x 52 cm., framed under glass: 48 cm x 76 cm. Excellent work, top condition.

PAIR of watercolors, the larger of raspberries on the vine, painted with amazing attention to detail and realism, measuring 10 3/4" by 8" inside the mat; the smaller painting of three bright red cherries and a leaf, measuring 6" by 9" inside the mat, BOTH SIGNED AT LOWER RIGHT with initials "M. C. R.". Since acquiring these works together at a shop in California's Gold Country a few years back, I have attempted to figure out who might have created them. A logical choice would be American still...

G. ANGIOLINI. The artist is obviously highly skilled. Paintings by this D. G. Angiolini generally feature genre scenes of Venice, or views of Venice. At least one online offering of a painting thus signed suggests that this is a pseudonym for highly important Italian 19th century artis...
