In the early 1980s Haku Maki produced this unusual print, Poem 3. It has a kanji bottom margin (Mountain and Water) and is only slightly embossed. It is as if he started to do a lithograph and then decided to emboss it a bit. It is a modest-size print and not spectacular. By the time he did this print Maki had finished with embossed kanji and ceramics and was heading toward less compelling work.Poem 3 has a gold sun right center, but the print has no drama and no oomph. 15x15cm.

Some time ago one Connie Elrod offered me a set of the Maki zodiac in a format never seen before or since. These are not pulled from cement blocks. Rather they seem to be printed lithographs. One James Imai, a friend of Maki who lives in California, commissioned Maki to do a special zodiac set for the Lunar Year. Imai seems to have sent a card every year to friends. Imai sent them to his friend James Elrod seemingly one every year for 12 years. The designs are strong and dramatic and very...
Original silk screen print of sunflowers by the Japanese artist, Yukio Katsuda. The use of very thick ink was part of Katsuda's technique lending the finished image a pointalist effect. It is numbered 35 of 100 in this series. Katsuda also gave each of his print series a number. This series number is 139, also written in penci...
Lithograph, 14 3/4" by 12 1/4" inside the mat, 21" by 18" as simply framed, signed in the plate at lower left "Merlin" and dated nearby 1939, also numbered (I think, also, in the plate, interestingly), 14/34 at lower right. This is a scarce work by the American Scene listed artist MAURICE MERLIN (1909-1947). The artist's short life likely accounts for the lack of recognition of his work. The following information is taken from the askart site: "He was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on September 2...
