Japanese limited edition woodblock print by Morihiro Sato (b. 1943) depicting white bellflowers. A student of Joichi Hoshi who was influenced by Hoshi's use of metallic pigments, the artist set the flowers and partial moon (or sun) against a metallic background. Depending upon the lighting conditions (see image taken with flash) the background appears either golden or silver. The print is pencil-titled in kanji "Autumn (Bellflowers)" and numbered 3/55 at the lower left...
A circa 1920's to 1940's old reprint of the much-loved classic Currier and Ives lithograph "American Winter Scenes", with a horse-drawn sleigh heading towards the snug home at right in which a party appears to be held. The piece measures 23 1/2" by 30 1/2" in what I believe is a birdseye maple frame. Condition is very good, vintage condition. The original 19th century lithograph is very expensive; this reasonable alternative will provide the same decorative punch.

This horizontal print, created in 1973, is Work 73-14A, a dramatic depiction of the kanji for Dragon. It is 17 of 103 and measures 16.25inW x 11.5inH. Maki did perhaps a dozen dragons and this is one of the most striking.
Original print in black and white, described on paperwork affixed to the backing as a Heliogravure, 10 1/4" by 8 3/4" inside the mat (26" by 22" as framed), not signed or numbered. The popular and familiar image is "Gabrielle et Jean" (after the famous painting of Renoir's wife and son). Heliogravure is described as one of the very earliest photographic etching processes. Apparently in 1919 at the artist's death, heliogravures were made of many of his popular paintings...

For the Andrew Wyeth collector, a color collotype print "Arthur Cleveland", circa 1965, from a limited edition of only 100, **with INK SIGNED-by-the-artist label** affixed to the backing. Engraving on paper, the sheet 16" by 13 /4" (23 3/4" by 20" as framed), the subject man's cruelty to animals. This work, part of a series of images dealing with the subject, has become over time a landmark commentary on man's cruelty to his fellow creatures. This print is by one of the most famous satirists and social commentators of all time, WILLIAM HOGARTH of England (1697-1764). Hogarth was a painter as well, but it is for his satirical, widely distributed prints focusing on social misdeed...

There is a crease in each lower corner that I believe likely dates to the time of printing, and there are a few foxing spots, but the overall appearance is excellent. I have not examine...

One of a number of Whistler lithographs I am offering: "Firelight: Joseph Pennell No. 1", 1896, sheet approximately measuring 13 3/4" by 10 1/4", currently in a mat with window, hinged at top edge, not laid down, unframed. Generally clean, with some imperfections along edges. Whistler created some 179 lithographs in his career, in addition to more graphic art as etchings, along with paintings, pastels, and watercolor. He remains one of the most famous of western artists, and is credited as the f...
In late 2011, I received several Maki prints of 1981. These all have leather-like surfaces. I thought this was a phenomenon of that year. I was wrong. Maki actually used this surface in 1971 for a few Persimmon prints and then not again until 1981. I show here copies from my Maki archives. When we filed those images a long time ago, they were not clear enough, are still not. But I think they are with that leather-like finish. Any views most gratefully received. My images are from catalo...
An etching with extensive watercolor depicting two arches of an old bridge with a house built on the pier between the arches, two men in red coats and a dog on the bank below the bridge and lane with trees and houses on the right. Titled along the lower margin to the left, “Part of the Old Bridge east Shrewsbury.” It is unsigned, but part of the old mount that is saved in a folder on the back of the present mount states that it is by Paul Sandby (British 1725-1809). The evidence that it is b...

Large folio size (19 1/2" by 24" inside the mat, 24 1/2" by 20" as framed) hand colored 19th century original vintage lithograph print (1867), titled at bottom "Horses at the Ford" by the iconic American print makers Currier and Ives. A great piece of Americana, this print is apparently rather scarce. Hand coloring in various shades of green, mostly, makes for a most attractive example. I have had an opportunity to examine this out of the frame. It exhibits normal browning, and there are old...
A circa 1930 colorful, beautiful, accomplished woodblock print of a Christmas cactus, by Austrian-born artist HUGO NOSKE (1886-1960). This is one of those prints. Measurements are 12" by 13 1/8". The highly delicate paper is NOT laid down, just taped at upper...

This is an antique photograph of earlier days on Charlotte Street, in the very historic town of Saint Augustine, Florida (which dates to 1565). For a long time I suspected this was Saint Augustine but recently I saw another example of this photograph, and in the margin it was titled "Charlotte Street, Saint Augustine". Charlotte Street is a block in from the ocean front road, in the old center of the town. Today it is squarely in the tourist zone, with T-shirt shops, fudge purveyors, and inti...
