TWO antique original (not reproduction) lithograph prints with delicate, subtle hand coloring,by noted English artist and nineteenth century Middle Eastern traveler DAVID ROBERTS (1796-1864). The prints both measures 8 3/4" by 12 1/2" (14 1/2" by 18 1/2" as framed). Roberts is best known for his lithographed images of sites in the classical Middle East, of which these are typical examples. I've not examined these out of the frames but they do appear to be in excellent, clean condition...

The sheet measures 7" by 6" inside the mat, 16" by 15" as framed. This is a circa 1946-48 posthumous edition on cream wove paper, with the A.V.D. The sheet measures 17 3/4" by 15 1/2" and 19 1/2" by 17 1/4" very nicely framed back in the 1950's or so in Chicago at Anderson Galleries (label on backing). The dark outline of the barn, with its modernistic texture and shadows, contrasts with the luminous winter sky. One of Barker's best prints.

Mortimer Menpes, English, 1860-1938, "Interior of St Maclou, Rouen". This etching by Mortimer Menpes measures 12 3/8 x 6 3/8 inches, pencil signed, c. 1902, edition of 50, looking towards the Gothic Baldachin. Menpes attended the School of Art in London in 1878 and started exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1880. He became a major figure in the etching revival, producing more than seven hundred different etchings and drypoints, which he usually printed himself.

John Winkler, American, 1894-1979, "Standard Fisheries". This 1941 etching by John Winkler measures 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and is pencil signed. Winkler was originally from Austria coming to America at the age 16. After various jobs he impulsively enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute and soon discovered his talent as an etcher. He became good friends with John Taylor Arms as well as Arthur Heintzelman. His works are found in many major museums throughout the US and Europe.

Colorful poster "Nichols Canyon", after the famous 1980 Hollywood Hills painting by world-renowned British-born artist now associated with Southern California, David Hockney (born 1937). The offset lithograph measures 35 1/2" by 23" inside the white laminate frame. That framing suggests that this is a vintage print and not a later reproduction...

Diana Thorne, American, b. 1895, "Russians". An energetic image of a young woman walking her two Russian wolfhounds, this etching measures 5 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches, c. 1930, pencil signed below the image, titled on the lower margin. Diana Thorne was a well known early 20th century artist and illustrator, known especially for her etchings of dogs and illustrations of numerous children's books.

Utagawa Yoshitsuya, Japanese, 1822-1866, "Senjubo Aiming at Harunaga-Ko". This is a an original color woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuya from his series '54 Battle Stories of Hideyoshi". This is a very rare unsigned proof, which does not appear in the Fern & O'Sullivan catalog. We believe this portrait to be of 17th century French artist Jacques Callot, whom Baskin greatly admired and included in his series of etchings, "Portraits of Ten Artists" in 1964.

Large limited-edition Japanese woodblock print by Joshua Rome (b. 1953) titled “Inawara” dated 12/20/1982. The bottom margin is titled, dated, numbered 28/100 and signed in pencil. The artist's red seal is beside the signature. Paper: 18 1/8" x 25" (image: 15 1/2” x 21 5/8"). Very good overall condition. The print is very lightly sunstruck. The bottom margin corners are a little wrinkled and the paper at the back upper edge is slightly distressed from tape removal.
