Japanese limited edition copperplate etching titled “Kyoto #7: Kozan-ji” by Tanaka Ryohei (1933-2019). Pencil-signed, dated '96, and numbered 141/150 in the lower margin. The title in kanji is at the bottom left margin. Paper: 11 5/8" x 10 1/4" (image: 6 3/8" x 8"). Very good overall condition with a possible faintly visible smudge in the upper left margin corner. There are a few distressed fibers on the back, but the print does not appear to have been previously framed.

The French fashion and costume magazine "La Mode Illustree" operated from about 1859 through at least the 1920's, featuring the styles of the day. This is a fine engraving, circa 1875 or 1880, judging from the fashion depicted. It is hand colored. Size as framed is 13 1/2" by 9 1/2". The framing though narrow is an interesting design. The print has some overall light browning/aging as would be expected of paper of this age---but it is even and not at all obtrusive...

Albert Abramovitz, Latvian/American, 1879-1963, "Construction Work, Moscow". A remarkable original linocut, image size 8 3/4 x 11 1/2 inches, c. 1930s, pencil signed and titled. Albert Abramovitz was known for his dramatic images with sharp social commentary, many portraying the hardships of daily life for working class people in both America and Russia. Born in Latvia, Abramovitz studied at the Imperial Art School in Odessa and the Grande Chaumiere in Paris...

A rare opportunity to acquire a work by the important California artist AUGUST GAY (1890-1948): an etching on delicate thin tissue-like paper, apparently unsigned, the sheet 5 7/8" by 8 1/8" (9 3/4" by 10 3/4" in black strip frame). The subject is the historic old Stevenson House in old Monterey, a favorite subject of many artists...

This is Maki's print 71-2, which tells us it was the second print that he created in 1971.

This is a wonderful image of boys playing their very basic game in the middle of a gritty urban street, by an artist who is generally grouped with the Ashcan School of social realism of the early part of the 20th century...

THREE pencil signed etchings, all of orientalist subject matter including possible temples, mosques and bazaars, all unframed, by the Dutch artist MARIUS BAUER (1867-1932). Bauer was born in The Hague and died in Amsterdam but in his lifetime strayed far from the confines of the Netherlands, visiting the Middle East, India, Russia, North Africa and the Dutch East Indies. This dramatic Big Red—a name Daniel Tretiak attached to Haku Maki’s large red prints, usually of single Chinese characters (kanji) on black backgrounds—is a character meaning ordinary or commonplace. But Maki has done it in a stand-out way. It is 17.5in W x 24.5inH. NOTE: Dan Tretiak also referred to other large single-character ones of other colors as Big Yellow, Big Green, etc. See an interesting discussion of this between him and a friend at entry #1191431 below.

The dark outline of the barn, with its modernistic texture and shadows, contrasts with the luminous winter sky. One of Barker's best prints.
