An antique watercolor landscape (17 1/2" by 29 1/2", and 25 1/2" by 37 1/2" framed) featuring a peaceful scene of a house on a northeastern lake, a sail boat lazily floating by, signed lower right and dated there 1889 by the well known American 19th century painter EDMUND DARCH LEWIS (1835-1910). The artist painted from Maryland to Maine, visited Cuba and apparently Italy, and even apparently spent a short time on the Pacific coast at Monterey, California...

The work is titled "Mojave" on an old label affixed to the frame. Schiefer was born in The Netherlands. After study in Paris, he painted in southern France and in Italy for a time, before coming to the United States, where he settled in Southampton, New York...

The work measures 10 3/4" by 15 1/4" inside the mat and 17 1/2" by 21" as framed. The artist titled it at lower left "#69 Hell Gate Bridge" and inscribed it in pencil at lower margin "To Harold Swartz--Artist". (Harold Swartz appears to refer to the Los Angeles/New Mexico sculptor, born 1887, died 1948)...

All photos were taken through the detail-dulling non-glare glass that was popular in the sixties and seventies. I see a listing for a Frank Lockwood as photographer but no convincing listing for a painter by that name.

Nutting was born in Nevada. He became known in California for landscape and portrait works. He and his wife spent time painting in Cambria on the scenic Central Coast in 1939 and again from 1953-1955. Apparently he also spent time in Texas...

Pair of early Edo period carved Baku mythological elephants. These would have been built into the design of a temple, displayed high up by the beam construction. Hand carved with great care from a single piece of Keyaki hardwood (zelkova wood).

Baku are Japanese supernatural beings that dispel evil spirits and devour nightmares when the mouth is open and retain good spirits when the mouth is closed...

A PAIR of unframed oil on canvas works, one a scene of coastal cliffs and waves, 12" by 12", the other featuring a small lake or pond, 11" by 14" (both unframed). They are each signed by the artist, one M. Mahmoudi. I have not located information on the obviously talented artist, who is likely Californian; found in Los Angeles. Condition is excellent. What appear as white speckles in some images are reflections off the varnish and canvas weave.

A fine example of the renowned still life paintings produced by French artist ROBERT CHAILLOUX (1913-2006), measuring 13" by 16" (20" by 23" in gold frame). The oil on canvas, signed at lower left, is in excellent condition. Chailloux exhibited at the Salon des Arts Francaises by 1940, and numerous times in subsequent decades. His work was shown at the Hermitage in Leningrad and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow in 1975...
