Early watercolor on paper of flowers, I think petunias, in a ceramic vessel, 11" by 14", 17 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right indecipherably, and possibly dated 1901. I believe the artist is likely listed, considering the quality of the drawing. The paper was laid long ago on a board, as shown. Condition of the image area is excellent, with colors true and not faded.

An accomplished, very western American pastel drawing on paper of a frontiersman, (11" by 9", and 15 1/4" by 13 3/4" as simply framed), signed at lower right "Lea" and with copyright symbol. I sent images to the Tom Lea (1907-2001) Institute in El Paso, Texas, thinking this may be by that well-known artist but they responded that it is not. Therefore, it is offered as simply a nice drawing with a lot of western appeal. Likely date of execution circa 1970's or 1980's.

Colorful watercolor on paper of a ceramic figure with copper pot and summer fruit, measuring 6 1/2" by 5 7/8" (13" by 12 3/4" as framed, no glass), likely the work of noted American artist FREDERIC GRANT (1886-1959). The work is apparently unsigned, but, on the original framing paper appears in a modern hand "BY FREDERICK GRANT"; originally there was also an old framer's sticker from Chicago but it has apparently dropped off since I purchased this...

Watercolor painting of a sunny meadow by the sea, vegetation partially obscuring a distant view to a coastline, 9 1/8" by 13 1/4" (16 1/2" by 20" in wood strip frame), signed at lower right by American artist HARRIET WINSLOW HAYDEN (1840-1926)--some give date of death as 1906. Hayden worked in both Massachusetts, and, later, in Colorado, where she became an active member of Denver-area art groups...

Oil on paper or board painting of daffodils in a German beer glass, 23 1/4" by 17" (32" by 26" framed), signed at lower right "G Busby" or similar, and dated there 3/89. This is an airy and modern-feeling work, which reminds a bit of David Hockney and Wayne Thiebaud mixed together (Hockney the overall airiness and top portion, Thiebaud the heavily worked paper doily at bottom)...

This is a nicely executed watercolor of a cathedral on the banks of a river, identified by an old pencil inscription on the reverse as "At Mantes on the Seine". Measuring 9 1/2" by 13 1/2" inside the mat opening and 15 1/2" by 20" as framed behind Plexiglas, the work appears to be unsigned. In the style of the times, the drawing was glued to a thin board, long ago...

Oil on canvas painting of a tawny autumn landscape,15 3/4 " by 20 3/4" (20 3/4" by 25" framed), not signed on the front, but bearing a tattered label with an apparent name beginning with "Eve..", and dedicated on the reverse of the canvas in 1933. The reverse inscription says "Merry Christmas 1933/to Lulu (XXX--unreadable)/old friend (XXX---unreadable). This might be a California landscape, but it would be difficult to state that with any certainty...

Oil on masonite painting of colorful flowers in a vase, painted in a lovely impressionist hand, with lots of light, signed at lower left with what appears as "Olle Erikson" and dated there 1946. The painting measures 17 1/2" by 21" (21" by 24 1/2" framed). I have searched online under this name and similar spellings and strangely cannot seem to come up with a listed artist corresponding to the name. Listed or not, the artist knew how to paint...

This is a fine work of art, 21 1/2" by 12 1/2", ( 24" by 16" as framed), unsigned on front but bears a handwritten notation on reverse "Vinnie Gjere", which definitely refers to the artist; see a companion piece also on my site, which is actually signed with a conjoined "VG" monogram on the front. By the noted Indiana artist WILLIAM A. EYDEN (1893-1982), an unusually good work in watercolor and gouache, featuring the beech trees associated with the Indiana landscape. The partially denuded forest is shown in late autumn, waiting for winter's arrival. Some leaves still cling to the trees in a chill wind we can nearly feel. The painting measures 17 3/4" by 23 1/2" (24" by 29 1/2" as framed)...

A beautifully executed original watercolor painting of Sacre Coeur church and surrounding street in Montmartre district of Paris, titled at lower right "Paris Place St. Pierre" and signed at lower left by artist "G. A large watercolor painting in impressive strongly horizontal format, the subject waves rolling in on a coast, sailing boats on the horizon, the work signed at lower left by artist "Langdon". This could be Chauncey Langdon (1828-1907), described on AskArt as a topographical painter from Vermont who came around the Horn to California in the Gold Rush days. This would fit, as I have seen (generally smaller, or small) watercolor landscapes by this same artist, (generally flat landscapes, often wi...

A very well executed oil on canvas coastal landscape painting, square shape at 23 1/4" by 23 1/4" (28 3/4" by 28 3/4" in cream-color laminated framing), the scene a traditional picturesque small fishing craft of Southeast Asian waters, with several figures and distant craft loosely suggested, the work signed at lower right with what appears as "Sobinto". Oil on canvas laid on board painting of a windswept cypress type tree by the coast dunes, 8 1/2" by 4 1/4" (14 1/2" by 10 1/2" attractively framed). Although unsigned (and Detreville's output frequently WAS unsigned), the handling, subject matter and color palette are strong indicators of the hand of the noted California painter. I have owned and sold other unsigned paintings as being by Detreville, and I will stand by this being one of his works. Detreville was born in South Carolina but is now...

A circa mid 1960's oil on canvas painting of a dark-haired young woman, 10 1/2" by 8 3/4" (18" by 16" in a gold frame that appears to me to be hand carved and leafed). The artist signed at upper left with what looks like "Roth". There is a Montmartre kitsch look but I cannot be sure of a Paris origin. Condition is good though I note the alligatoring of the paint, especially in the young lady's hair (this is a kind of splitting pattern in the paint, not truly cracking, caused by a rapid paint d...

Oil on canvas extensive mountain and trees landscape laid on board, 8" by 10" (10 1/2" by 12 1/2" framed), unsigned, circa late 1920's to mid 1930's. I am certain that this is by a listed artist but sadly there's just no hint as to who created this. The scene could be western, or eastern; hard to tell. It was found in Southern California. I would lean towards it being a western scene. The painting is very dirty; a cleaning would be really desirable, as it would really improve the presentati...

The painting is signed at lower left by the artist, William P. Lawrence and is dated below that either 1938 or 1928; difficult to discern. 20th Century American School 1900-1999 American Artists This is the third watercolor and gouache painting that we recently acquired. All park scenes, all painted on a blue toned paper, nicely framed with archival materials. We are unsure who this artist was, most likely one of the mid 1930's American Illustrators. The image measures 8 1/4X5 1/4 inches. Unexamined out of the frame. Probably a view in Central Park N.Y.

Brooks Pettus (1918-2003) was a noted western American artist who passed away in Kennewick, Washington, leaving behind a large body of work in watercolor and oil that only recently appeared on the market. Pettus earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico, and spent time in Albuquerque and Taos in the early 1940's. New Mexico's artistically inspiring landscape stimulated Pettus' aesthetic sense as it has for countless others. Even though he became a professional engineer, ...
