Beautiful Japanese studio vase, in the form of a Han Dynasty cocoon vase, in the Mingei style, mid 20th century. Very reminiscent of the work of Kawai Kanjiro. In Venice Italy, these Obelisks were recently included in Fondazione Cini's exhibition "Paolo Venini and His Furnace," and are documented in the exhibition catalogue, page 308, model 4300. Constructed of thick canes twisted into a zanfrico design, this is a fine example of utilizing the traditional Venetian technique of zanfrico in a modern expression. The Obelisk has the 2 acid stamps: venini murano, made in Italy, measures 8" tall, and is in good condition.

Fine and rare two paneled wedding blanket from the Bouyi (aka Buyi) ethnic group in Changshun area Guizou, China. Woven from all handspun cotton thread. The blue and white center field has a “wanzi” swastika meander pattern while the upper and lower parts are the repetitive “well” symbols. This dates circa 1960’s. Without border- L 130cm/51in and W: 72cm/28in, with border- L: 176cm/69in and W: 114cm/28in. A stunning piece- almost has a Mark Rothko feeling to it.

A set of two incense items carved from blocks of dried lacquer, the surfaces polished to reveal the various layers and colors of lacquer used in a mottled pattern. Truly quite spectacular despite their diminutive size, the koro is 10 x 6 x 7.5 cm (4 x 2-1/4 x 3 inches), the kogo is 4 cm (1-1/2 inches) diameter and both are in excellent condition.

The kilims from around Almar, a village near Maimana, are tightly woven and feature large central medallions with hooked motifs. This hand knotted kilim measures 96.5 x 124.5 cm and is in excellent condition. It dates to the late 20th century and is made of sheep's wool. The palette is subdued as is typical of the kilims from this area of Afghanistan. This kilim was made of vegetable dyes.

BLUE BOJAGI

Bojagi (Pojagi) as traditional folk Korean patchwork hemp textile made from deep blue and pale blue scrap fabrics, late 20th century, 103 x 105 cm (40.55 x 41.33in), embodies the lifestyle and the story of the people who take good care of their possessions at that time. Relatively thicker type (deep colored parts are thinner as more seen through). Some slight frays and discoloring due to aging, but in beautiful vintage condition as is as seen.

This old textile from Maqur district in Ghazni province, Afghanistan dates from the early to mid 20th century and is embroidered in silk thread on a muslin ground, on an additional muslin background. Abstract volute motifs are dynamically joined in ladder stitch and tightly worked to showcase the two central medallions which are the centerpiece of the composition. This textile measures 55 x 81 cm and is in excellent condition.

A beautiful Japanese black lacquer over wood with applied mother of pearl charger featuring 2 sparrow-like birds surrounded by cherry blossoms. The branches have gold highlights and the cherry blossom buds have red lacquer accents. One small mop bud is missing, otherwise in very good condition. Measures 17 inches in diameter.
