A large silk painting of a scene from the history of Japan by Kai Seihyo (1882-1974), one of Japan's noted painters specializing in historical subjects. Kai Seihyo was trained at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts. It was later in Seihyo's life where the artist began producing unique historical subjects and received high acclaim where Seihyo was known for his paintings of samurai and horses. Paper samples of obi (kimono sash) from a certain kimono fabrics shop in Kyoto, Japan, Showa period, early-mid 20th century, approx. 45.5 x 30cm (17.71 x 11.81in)...

This lovely album was attributed to Ishihara Matsuyoshi 石原松芳, signed in 昭和庚辰年 (1940). 28 spreads (56 pages) in total, and 27 paintings in one album. Subjects from birds, flowers, mythologies, still life, figures to landscapes, a glimpse of the artist's rich spiritual world. Signed with two seals on each painting. Very good condition, no big damage except for the aging paper.

A closed ensō (such as the one featured here) is more closely associated with the idea of transcendent perfection, while an open ensō represents movement, fluidity, and attainment in the corporeal world...

Japanese scroll painting in ink and colors on paper depicting a samurai in full armor, a fan in his hand and a banner on his back, standing above a kneeling geisha, a lengthy poem inscribed above. Wonderful quality eccentric work combining Zen painting approach with Otsu-e (folk art paintings from Otsu produced from the 17th century onwards), beautifully captured mood of the scene. Silk brocade mounts, tiny bit of foxing, overall in great condition...

A set of four fans (uchiwa) made of bamboo and washi (Japanese hand-made paper). Each has hand-painted pictures and signs such as three kabuki "kumadori" which is special makeup of the kabuki player and Otahuku. All have the same written seal marks, however the name of the artist is not clear. Two are painted with kakishibu (persimmon tannin) 20th century. In excellent condition. W:30.5cm H:35.5cm

Vintage Japanese Showa period ink and color on paper scrolled painting of trees by Uda Tekison (1896-1980). The black ink signature and red artist’s “Tazen” seal are at the lower right. Included is a signed tomobako wood presentation box. Mid-20th century. Painting: 16 1/2” x 20 3/8” (scroll: 55 1/2” x 26 1/4"). Very good overall condition. From a Tucson, Arizona estate.

Additional photos of this fabulous Accordion book of 12 paintings by Kimura Seiun enclosed in a wooden box titled Atami Dan Ko-gasatsu and dated early Spring of Showa 4 (1929). The introductory page is written by Zen priest Hashimoto Dokuzan of Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto. The paintings are each signed with various names used by Kimura, mostly Seiun or Ren. The introductory and concluding pages are both dated 1929. It is 28 x 14 cm (5-1/2 x 11 inches) and in overall outstanding condition...

Embossed limited edition etching by Japanese artist Mayumi Oda (1941-present) titled "Treasure Ship on the Great Lake", #11/30. It is signed at the bottom in pencil. The treasure ship is usually depicted with the Seven Lucky Gods aboard it, however Mayumi believed only in goddesses and thus created her treasure ship collection depicting only females riding aboard it. Mayumi is known as the 'Matisse of Japan'...

A fascinating portrait of the noted ukiyoe artist, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. The work was painted by his disciple, Yamanaka Kodo (1869-1945) in 1934 and was originally part of the collection of Kobori Sakae, who collected various old books and donated his collection to the Waseda University. Above the portait are two poems done by two noted poets...
