1920s Japanese ceramic tokkuri - sake bottle - with conical body and narrow mouth. The piece was made at Shigaraki kilns - one of the six ancient kilns of Japan - and displays typical coarse body with large sand particles, freely applied gray glaze with some areas that fired brick red. Excellent piece in Japanese taste, beautiful spiral line on the bottom. Some compressed dust, overall in excellent condition. Height 5 3/8 inches.

Japanese limited edition woodblock print by French artist Paul Jacoulet (1902-1960) titled "Sunset in Menado, Celebres" (Coucher de Soleil a Menado. Celebres) published December 26, 1938. Executed in a soft palette, the print depicts a nude male in a subservient position to the female standing over him. Japanese Taisho to Showa period vertical scrolled painting executed in sumi ink and wash on paper with a landscape scene featuring two figures at a bridge beside looming rockery, trees, a traditional hut, and a waterfall. Painted in the style of Sesshu. Signed with a red seal at the lower right. Bone scroll ends. Scroll: 50” x 16 1/8” (paper: 21 1/4” x 13”). Very good overall condition.

Stoneware receptacle, probably used as a kensui, or waste-water jug, in the tea ceremony. Relatively high, straight sides with a constriction under the edge, decorated with the typical green glaze patches and geometrical patterns and plant motives in iron brown on white slip. Bottom inside left unglazed. Impressed seal in bottom, in the shape of a flying plover. Seto ware, Oribe style, Japan, Taisho period or early Showa, 1920s-1930s.

Nice antique bags from Afghanistan with exquisite silk embroidery. Bought these in Peshawar in the mid 90s. There is red satin on the larger bag is new and can be removed the smaller bag has a stain but may wash out (never tried so no guarantees). Small bag 10.7cm/4.2in x 10.cm/4.2in, larger bag is 14cm/5,5in x 16cm/6.3in.

Japanese lacquered on Reed Kimono Tray, Ca. 1940's, 26" x 16", 4" high, top trim is almost 1/2" thick wood lacquered frame with gold foliage design on black, brown chestnut color lacquered on woven reed basket. There are some small missing lacquer pieces on the trim and reed basket.

Household protector made of wood, carved to represent two Janus type heads surmounted by horns. This protector was installed on top of a house roof. Beautiful age patina. Indonesia, Timor Island. He did it no later than 1966 it depicts many cells of a human all done very explicitly and clearly Cell was an early Maki theme He used it less than a dozen times the cells must have been busy re-creating themselves But here they seem calm and static Embossed z

Very old (over 50 years) which is ancient by Burmese lacquer standards. This was possibly made by the Shan who favored dramatic geometric designs over the more figural Burman style. This has some fritting on the lacquer. H: 24cm/9.5in D: 18cm/7.1in.
